ATOMS FOR PEACE PROMISED FREE POWER TOO CHEAP TO METER, CLEAN AND GREEN ENERGY, POWERING JETS, AIRPLANES, CARS, POWER PLANTS, SUBMARINES, SHIPS, AND TO DIG LAKES, CANALS AND FOR SPACE TRAVEL

The promise right after WWII, was that nuclear power was so fantastic, that it was too cheap to meter, clean and green.

There would be atomic powered airplanes, cars, submarines, ships, and more. Nuclear bombs would be used to dig lakes, canals and other things, in an ATOMS FOR PEACE campaign.

Someone even came up with a design for a huge nuclear powered aircraft that would tow several other jets behind it.

Of course, these things did not work out, because it turned out that the promises were based on lies. Harry Truman did not trust the military with this power either, so he created the civilian controlled Atomic Energy Commission, which eventually closed and was disbanded due to the absolutely corrupting influence of the nuclear industry and military industrial complex, which loved the huge no bid profits generated, and they did not care about the radioactive heavy metal poisons causing cancers and killing people.

This article explores the research done on nuclear powered jet engines and aircraft, while explaining the many reasons why this was not pursued, for many good reasons.

GE DEVELOPED NUCLEAR POWERED JET ENGINE THROUGH AIRCRAFT NUCLEAR PROPULSION PROGRAM

The Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion program researched and developed two main systems of nuclear powered jet engines. The Direct Air Cycle program was the first of these. Developed by General Electric, this facet of the program was based in Evendale, Ohio.

DIRECT AIR CYCLE PROGRAM

The Direct Air Cycle program was popular because it was simple, reliable and suitable and the engines were able to start quickly. It worked by letting compressed air run through the reactor of a conventional jet engine where it could be heated before being exhausted through the turbine.

HTRE - 3 POWERED X - 6 NUCLEAR JET ENGINE POWERED EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT

The final HTRE-3 would have most likely been used to power the X-6 nuclear propulsion aircraft if the project hadn't been scrapped.

The major issue was how to protect the crew from the deadly radiation, so the idea was to use older crew, and base the aircraft on only uninhabited islands.  Radiation shielding was experimented with. The experimenters combined water jackets and lead shielding to separate the crew from the nuclear reactor.

The problem still remained, what to do if the plane crashed? The plan was that each nuclear powered bomber would carry a crew of Marines, who in case of a crash, would parachute out of the plane BEFORE it crashed, and seal off the area from curious onlookers. The nuclear powered plane weighed about 80 tons.

The other problem that was never solved was the amount of radiation coming out of the plane's engine, due to the direct heating of the air from the hot, radioactive material inside the reactor. GE developed this engine.

The problem of radiation coming out of the bomber anywhere it went, created the need for an indirect heating system. An indirect heating system would reduce the radioactivity entering the air from the nuclear reactor. Pratt and Whitney worked on the indirect atomic energy system for planes, but never perfected it, despite years of research.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER ORDERED NUCLEAR JET POWERED BOMBER RESEARCH STOPPED, BUT THEN IT WAS RESTARTED DUE TO CIA 'INTELLIGENCE'

President Eisenhower ordered a stop to the flying nuclear bomber research program. Then the Soviets announced that they had perfected a nuclear powered plane. Eisenhower restarted the program due to public pressure. This Soviet announcement turned out to be fake news propaganda.

SOVIETS BUILT A DIRECT TO AIR NUCLEAR POWERED JET AIRCRAFT

The Soviets eventually did build a direct cycle radiation powered plane, which passed dirty, contaminated radioactive materials into the air, where ever it flew.  They solved the weight problem by taking out the shielding and making the reactor hotter, so it would produce more power, but also more radiation.

The plane was also poorly shielded, so the crew was exposed to pretty large doses of radiation. About 40 test flights were conducted. Most of the crew of this experiment died from radiation poisoning. Radiation was spread over a large area, due to nothing more than the plane flying overhead.

When President Kennedy came into office, he found out that the Republicans and the military industrial complex had been lying to the American public for years. The CIA had said that the Soviets were way ahead of the US in terms of bombers, missiles and technology. This was a lie. Through aerial spying, Kennedy found out that the Soviets only had a few missiles, a few bombers and no superior technology.

The exposure of this lie led to the nuclear disarmament treaties, because there really was no race in terms of weapons building. The US had been wasting a huge amount of money on a useless build up of weapons that would never be used. Kennedy tried to put a stop to all of this corruption and exposing people to deadly radiation. He also tried to scale back the CIA, where much of this secret work was being done. He also tried to bring back the gold backed dollar and to shut down the private, for profit Federal Reserve. As we all know, Kennedy was assassinated before any of this could happen, and almost all of these programs continued on, with no interruption.

After numerous problems the project was shut down in March 1953 only to be re-opened a year later. Technological competition with the Soviet Union (as represented by the launch of Sputnik), and continued strong support from the Air Force allowed the program to continue, despite divided leadership between the DOD and the AEC. The election of John F. Kennedy as President changed the course. Kennedy wrote "15 years and about $1 billion have been devoted to the attempted development of a nuclear-powered aircraft; but the possibility of achieving a militarily useful aircraft in the foreseeable future is still very remote" in his statement officially ending the ANP on March 26, 1961.[3]

ALVIN WEIBERG NUCLEAR POWERED BOMBER EXPERIMENT, SPREAD RADIATION ALL OVER THE COUNTRY

ChasAha April 13, 2015 Here's one of this guys other 'bright' ideas.
Wikidepdia; "The Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) project was ORNL's biggest program, using 25% of ORNL's budget. The ANP project's military goal was to produce a nuclear-powered aircraft (a bomber) to overcome the range limitations of jet-fueled aircraft at that time. That the project had little chance of success was not overlooked, but it provided employment and allowed ORNL to stay in the reactor development business."

However…

"ORNL successfully built and operated a prototype of an aircraft reactor power plant by creating the world's first molten salt fueled and cooled reactor called the ARE (Aircraft Reactor Experiment) in 1954, which set a record high temperature of operation of 1,600 °F (870 °C). Due to the radiation hazard posed to aircrew, and people on the ground in the event of a crash, new developments in ballistic missile technology, air refueling and longer range jet bombers, President Kennedy canceled the program in June 1961."

BOEING GRANTED A PATENT FOR NUCLEAR FUSION POWERED AIRCRAFT

from a distance July 15, 2015 Boeing has just been granted a patent on a design for aircraft powered by nuclear fusion, writes Karl Grossman. What a great idea! Apart from the irradiation of plane and passengers with neutrons and gamma rays, the dangers of radioactive contamination … and the fact that clean, green solar powered flight is taking off.

Consider getting on to an airplane with nuclear-powered engines.

Consider the consequences if an atomic airplane crashes."

"The Boeing scheme would have lasers in an airplane engine bombard deuterium or tritium causing a nuclear explosion with its force providing thrust."

"Imagine getting into an airplane that has minor nuclear explosions for propulsion. What about the implications of such an aircraft going down? We just saw an F-16 come down over South Carolina, its jet engine landing in someone's backyard."
