TRUMP WANTS TO MAKE IS EASIER AND CHEAPER TO DUMP HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTES, AND TREAT IT LIKE LOW LEVEL WASTE

Trump Wants to Reclassify Radioactive Waste from Nuclear Weapons to ‘Low Level’ so Disposal Is Cheaper

The Department of Energy intends to relabel high-level radioactive waste left over from the production of nuclear weapons as low-level, the Associated Press reported.

This is the worst idea ever, and this idiot has not idea what the heck he is doing. He has no idea of the radioactive monster he will unleash on the public if he changes high level nuclear waste to low level nuclear waste.

HOW DANGEROUS IS HIGH LEVEL WASTE? WHY CAN'T IT BE RECLASSIFIED AS LOW LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTE?

Dr. Helen Caldicott MD discusses negative health effects of nuclear waste

Making high level nuclear waste opens up a Pandora's box of horrors, because now it can be hauled around almost like regular garbage and almost no precautions have to be taken.

“High-level nuclear waste is almost unimaginably poisonous. Take for example cesium-137, with a half-life of 30 years, which makes up the largest fraction of long-lived radionuclides residing in spent nuclear fuel. One gram of radioactive cesium-137 (about half the size of a dime) contains 88 Curies of radioactivity. 104 Curies of radioactive cesium-137, spread evenly over one square mile of land, will make it uninhabitable for more than a century,” Comments on Draft of Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2013, Physicians for Social Responsibility, May 23, 2013.

RADIOACTIVE HEAVY METALS ARE INVISIBLE AND UNDETECTABLE TO THE HUMAN SENSES IN AIR, WATER, SOIL, FOOD OR DRINKS

When something is invisible, has no odor, and is undetectable to the human senses, it is pretty easy to hide the fact that it is being dumped or leaked into the environment. Dumping radioactive waste is not like dumping barrels of oil into the water or on the ground, which people can see. Nuclear waste can be dumped and no one will see it, smell it, hear it, taste it, or feel it. Yet, they could be standing in a deadly radioactive waste pool that will kill them in a few hours, and they would never know it.

Nuclear waste that comes out of nuclear reactors is high level waste, and is highly radioactive. This radioactive garbage coming out of a nuclear has the same radioactivity as one thousand nuclear weapons exploding and releasing their deadly poison.

How does one control something and monitor something that is an invisible but deadly radioactive heavy metal poison? This also indicates why the nuclear industry continues to dump radioactive waste into the worlds rivers, oceans, air and ground; in part because unless they inform someone, no one will know, because the dumping is invisible and undetectable by the human senses.

Helen Caldicott: Dangers of radioactive heavy metal, xrays, and Fukushima's Ongoing Impact

Once radioactive heavy metal poison gets into the environment, despite being invisible, it is absorbed by plants, fish, sea creatures, animals and trees. From there it concentrates up the food chain to the top, which is where people are.

If all nuclear garbage is considered 'low level', more of it will end up in metal products, either accidentally, or on purpose.

MANY NUCLEAR DISASTERS HAVE BEEN COVERED UP, DENIED, MINIMIZED OR SUPPRESSED BECAUSE THE DEADLY POISONS COMING OUT OF THEM ARE TOTALLY INVISIBLE

This invisible poison problem also points to how major nuclear disasters are covered up and minimized; because no one 'senses' anything is going wrong.

NUCLEAR WASTE DUMPING CONTINUES IN THE WORLD'S OCEANS

Vessel tugging stranded ship Horizon Trader traced
The vessel is owned by US shipping company Matson Inc, which has sold Horizon Trader for primitive ship breaking at Alang. The 42-year-old ship was last owned by All Star Metals of Brownsville, Texas. BAN has also obtained the original memorandum of agreement for the sale of the ship, which stipulated that the buyer would responsibly recycle the vessel in the US.

BAN, an international toxic waste watchdog, had flagged off the American vessel Horizon Trader , which has falsely claimed blackout but reportedly has the intention of dumping toxic waste into Indian waters. The ship, according to the network, is laden with Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), asbestos and possibly radioactive substances, putting the country’s maritime security and environment at risk.

“The Gauntlet has restricted mobility because it is towing the Trader but as soon as the tug leaves the vessel it appears there is no way of keeping track of the Trader, ” said New Delhi-based activist Gopal Krishna of Toxic Watch Alliance. The ship is said to be laden with radioactive substances and organic pollutants

Since there are not radioactive waste dumping police patrolling the world's oceans, and no agency is in charge of enforcing the 'no dumping' laws and treaties, the practice still continues, especially since no one seems to be monitoring or watching, and there are no consequences.

For example, in Japan, ocean dumping continues by throwing radioactive waste into the rivers, or via leakage from the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster, or from radioactively contaminated forests up in the mountains, which were never 'cleaned up'.

“…Taking reactors and cutting out the bottom of your ships and letting them sink to the bottom is about as irresponsible as you can get when it comes to radioactive waste," Jim Riccio, a nuclear expert with Greenpeace, told VICE News. "We've had some weird [behavior] in this country where we haven't been all that great with it but nothing that rose to the level of what the Soviets had done."
“Before the London Convention of 1972, an international agreement that prohibited marine dumping, countries were free to use the oceans as a trash heep for nuclear waste. Though the Soviets signed the treaty in the late 1980s, it wasn't until after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991 that the Russians opened up to the international community about the extent of the Arctic dumping campaign. …”

OCEAN DUMPING OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"From 1946 through 1993, thirteen countries (fourteen, if the USSR and Russia are considered separately) used ocean disposal or ocean dumping as a method to dispose of nuclear/radioactive waste. The waste materials included both liquids and solids housed in various containers, as well as reactor vessels, with and without spent or damaged nuclear fuel.[1] Since 1993, ocean disposal has been banned by international treaties. (London Convention (1972), Basel Convention, MARPOL 73/78)

However, according to the United Nations, some companies have been dumping radioactive waste and other hazardous materials into the coastal waters of Somalia, taking advantage of the fact that the country had no functioning government from the early 1990s onwards. According to one official at the United Nations, this caused health problems for locals in the coastal region and posed a significant danger to Somalia's fishing industry and local marine life.[2]

"Ocean floor disposal" (or sub-seabed disposal)—a more deliberate method of delivering radioactive waste to the ocean floor and depositing it into the seabed—was studied by the UK and Sweden, but never implemented.[3]

DISPOSAL SITES

Disposal projects attempted to locate ideal dumping site for depth, stability and current and to treat, solidify and contain the waste. However some dumping only diluted the waste with surface water, or containers that imploded at depth. Even containers that survived the pressure physically decay over time.

NORTH ATLANTIC

USS CALHOUN COUNTY DUMPED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE INTO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, NO RECORDS WERE KEPT, NO SEAMEN COULD COLLECT DISABILITY

For up to 15 years after World War II, the crew of Albernaz's ship, the USS Calhoun County, dumped thousands of tons of radioactive waste into the Atlantic Ocean, often without heeding the simplest health precautions, according to Navy documents and Tampa Bay Times interviews with more than 50 former crewmen.

Albernaz began a battle for his life in 1988 when part of his brain began to die, mystifying doctors who eventually concluded the rare ailment might be linked to radiation. He filed a VA claim for benefits in 2001 that was repeatedly rejected, often with tortured government reasoning.

The VA and Navy told Albernaz he was not exposed to radiation on the Calhoun County, a vessel the Navy ordered sunk in 1963 because it was radioactive. The VA ignored Navy documents discovered by a former congressional aide proving the ship's radioactivity, telling Albernaz they were "unsubstantiated." And the Navy today points to Cold War records that are incomplete and unreliable as proof crewmen were not exposed to dangerous radiation.

The Atomic Sailors (video)

Harvey Ray Lucas served in the late 1950s on the USS Calhoun County, a low-ranking Navy ship whose primary mission was to dump atomic and other military waste into the Atlantic Ocean. Lucas spent four years heaving radioactive materials over the side of the ship. After leaving the military, he suffered from chronic health problems and sired five children with birth defects. Lucas’s testimony made my jaw drop. He described one baby whose skin oozed “bloodwater.” He described the birth and death of another whom physicians termed an “anencephalic female monster.” A couple years after his testimony, Lucas died of a rare cancer associated with radiation exposure. I interviewed Deane Horne, whose teeth and hair had fallen out after he left the ship and whose eldest son was born without a femur. I interviewed Richard Tkaczyk, who had also lost his teeth and whose first born son had seizures and brain damage. I interviewed George Albernaz, who was half paralyzed after suffering from an odd brain disease that his physician called radiation necrosis. All had filed claims with the VA. None had made any headway.

Dumping occurred from 1948 to 1982. 78% of dumping in the Atlantic was done by UK (35,088TBq), followed by Switzerland (4,419TBq), USA (2,924TBq) and Belgium (2,120TBq). Sunken USSR nuclear submarines are not included. see List of sunken nuclear submarines

SUMMARY

Most of what is dumped, spilled or accidentally released into the world's oceans is NOT COUNTED.
The Wikipedia entry should be considered to be a very light guess, maybe 1% at best, of the total amount of radiation dumped either illegally or under cover of secrecy in the worlds rivers and/or oceans.

MMassive And Uncontrolled Radioactive Waste Dumping In Oceans Continues On Even Today

Comparing Contaminated Zones Around Chernobyl And Fukushima Ocean Radiation Released

Today, ocean dumping of radioactive waste continues via Fukushima dumping 400 tons of highly radioactive water into the Pacific ocean. Japan is trucking high level nuclear waste all over Japan, burning it, and them dumping the ashed into Tokyo Bay. The burning of radioactive waste all over Japan continues to this day, as well as the USA.

If anything, the dumping of nuclear waste is accelerating exponentially today, not reducing in amount, despite 'treaties' banning ocean dumping.
