Teach In; Petition Activism Training, Where Is It Easiest To Achieve A Positive Outcome With A Petition? Tips For Better Petition Results, Read Petitions Before You Sign Them

EXAMPLE OF NATIONAL PETITION WITH 2 MILLION SIGNATURES, AS PRESIDENT OBAMA PROPOSED REDUCING SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS BY A 'LIBERAL' DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT

Can Democrats still be 'liberal' if all they do is cut social safety net programs and Social Security?

National issues can also be influenced by petitions, but calls, emails, faxes and letters are much more effective. A petition with 100,000 to 1 million signatures is needed to have a major influence on a national level. Usually, only large organizations with millions of members can achieve this level of signature gathering.

READ A PETITION BEFORE YOU SIGN IT; DISCOVER HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL SIGN A PETITION THAT SAYS THEY ARE MORONS

Social critic Mark Dice asks people to sign a petition for some reason or another, and almot everyone does without even reading a word. Check out Mark's book The New World Order: Facts & Fiction on Amazon.com and Kindle. Mark Dice is a media analyst, social critic, political activist, and author who, in an entertaining and educational way, gets people to question our celebrity obsessed culture, and the role the mainstream media plays in shaping our lives.

Don't believe what someone tells you about a petition... At the very least, read the petition. Do the research on the organization and what their ulterior motives or financing is, because there are greenwashing organizations that are trying to derail the environmental movement, promote carbon or nuclear through underhanded sleazy petitions, laws, etc..

Hottest Petitions

The nice part of this petition site is that it allows signing of many petitions in a short amount of time, as it populates all of the typed in spaces needing your information automatically, once you are signed up as a member.

It is fairly easy to sign large numbers of petitions in just a few minutes using a site that gathers many petitions together in one place.

Just make sure that you AGREE with the petition title and summary before signing it. It is perfectly OK to not sign a petition, because you have freedom of choice. Make sure you use your power of choice and DECIDE which petitions you agree with and which ones you don't. Express your power and freedom of CHOICE by signing petitions.

WHERE ARE PETITIONS MOST EFFECTIVE? WHERE IS IT EASY TO ACHIEVE A POSITIVE OUTCOME WITH A PETITION?

Petitions are most effective locally, for local issues.  A few hundred to 1,000 signatures can make a difference and achieve a specific result on a local issue, especially if the petition indicates that these signers will vote in opposition and/or withhold money, donations or investments from a specific target unless their demand is met.

Regional issues can also be addressed using petitions, but many more signatures are needed to have an impact.

The above video features a local petition to rename a skate park in honor of a specific person. Along with local media featuring the petition, this has a high probability of success. Use the local media as much as possible to accelerate the petition signing process and to get more signatures. Make the petition easy to find, and be ready to give a url link to any media that asks about the petition. A press release to all of the local media is a good synergistic tactic. Send a petition press release to radio stations, TV stations, newspapers, etc...

If you do create a petition, start LOCAL, get a success or two under your belt, before moving on to a regional petition.

START A PETITION

Remember it is much easier to sign an existing petition with signatures already gathered, than to start another one. But if a petition does not already exist around a particular issue, it may be a good idea to start a petition. Here is a simple training to get you up to speed and ensure the highest possible chance of success with your petition.

TURN PETITION SIGNERS INTO STRONG ADVOCATES FOR A CAUSE

A strategically written petition will gather many signatures.

A well-organized petition, on the other hand, can turn those who sign your petition into strong advocates for your cause.

HOW TO WRITE A PETITION

1. Who are you writing the petition to? Make sure that party has the power to meet your demands.

2. A petition serves many functions, 1) to educate strangers to the depth and scope of a problem, 2) to generate media attention, 3) to gather tangible support for a cause, 4) to show that the people supporting the petition are educated, who signed the petition after weighing the facts 5) to convince the potential signer that the author of the petition knows what they are talking about, and 6) to answer the fundamental questions any reporter would ask, "Who, what, where, when, and why."

3. What are you trying to accomplish? Have a purpose or specific goal such as "Fix the voting machines in Smith County using funds from the state lottery" instead of a complaint like, "We don't like the voting machines."

4. Be specific about what you want, when you want it, and who you want to do it.

5. Study all the POPULAR petitions.See what they all have in common. It's okay to borrow the style and formula of other petitions that use a standard language format.

6. Spell check, use good grammar, be succinct, be polite -- and start circulating the petition. It's that easy!

DO A TEST IN YOUR SPECIFIC MARKET BEFORE ACTUALLY CREATING A PETITION

Although it takes longer, this process should result in a much better petition. The idea behind a petition is that a maximum percentage of people should agree with what is written and a minimum number should disagree with the statement in the petition. To followup on this, another suggestion for creating a good petition is to send the copy of the text to others and get feedback from them on wording, before actually creating a petition.

You might want to include some questions from volunteer petition readers such as: What wording works for you? What wording does not work for you? What parts do you agree with or disagree with? How would you change the wording to make this a better petition? What words get you upset? What wording makes you want to not sign the petition? What wording inspires you to take action? What wording gets you to want to sign your name? What wording would make you want to add or make a comment while signing the petition?

Once you have the wording fine tuned the way you want it, the following link is a good place to start creating your petition, although there are others websites.

WHAT YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE CREATING A PETITION

Creating a petition is a multi step process;

You'll fill out your sponsor information (you or your organization), and your petition target information ( the person or group you'll be delivering your petition's signatures to).

We'll ask you to fill out your petition content, the summary, information to educate signers about your issue, and the body, the text of the petition, which you will deliver to the petition's target along with the signatures. You'll also get a chance to;

 Pick a title

Set a signature goal

Set a deadline for your petition

You'll set up your signature requirements, specifying what information you need from signers to make your petition effective. The signers can be anonymous, or you may require specific information such as full name, address, country, zip code, etc.

Then you'll be ready to preview your petition, publish it to the site, and promote it!

At the end of the creation process, you will be taken to your petition's Dashboard, where you may manage your petition; a link to this page will also appear in the confirmation email sent to authors of new petitions.

A PETITION WRITERS TIPS FOR BETTER RESULTS

From personal experience of having created a petition, here are a few more suggestions on creating a successful petition.

Get help with a petition, by asking for assistance from allies and supporters, who can assis in generating publicity for a petition, because they feel strongly about it. Find and get allies to support, market and "sell" your petition, spreading it around into different areas where people can see it and then sign if they agree with it.

A petition can be ongoing, meaning that there is no specific end date to it. People can keep signing forever theoretically. A specific end date means that you as a petition creator will then print out the signatures and mail it in after the closing date.

The title is like a summary with only a few words. What is the goal of the petition? This goal should be in the title of the petition. Reading the title should give a person some idea of what the petition is about and attract their attention in just a few seconds.

The summary is the next marketing step, so the wording should be carefully chosen. The summary is short and sweet. It should be all that is required for anyone to read and then decide if they want to sign or not. Make the summary interesting, attention grabbing and compelling enough for the reader to want to sign the petition, without misleading them.

The body of the petition is where you post all of the specifics in great detail. This is where you can lay out all of the reasons for signing, the history of where the petition idea came from, background about the issue, details about the company or agency, etc. This is where you make the case for your petition. Like a lawyer arguing a case, you make a detailed case for your petition here.

If you post a petition idea in social media such as Facebook or an online group first to get ideas, you will get arguments against your idea. Counter these anti arguments against your position with your own pro arguments or points. Gather all of these counter points together and come up with all of the pro position points you can, before you post your petition, if at all possible.

Once you create a petition, it is not possible to change the detail section of your petition, so this work needs to be done ahead of time. You cannot add to, change or modify your petition for the most part, so get it right the first time. Write out your petition and 'practice' with it (fine tuning it) in other places with it first, before officially posting it for signatures.

A good writer will write something and then re-write it three times before publishing it. Petitions are like that as well. Write your petition somewhere else first, such as in Word.Send it around to your friends and get feedback from others before you actually submit it to the PetitionSite and put it up for the public to view.

REQUIRE COMMENTS IF A PETITION WILL GO TO A GOVERNMENT AGENCY

It is highly suggested that a petition be structured to require comments, especially if the petition will end up going to a government agency. Strongly encourage comments from those that sign the petition, especially petitions that are in the public comments venue. Why?

According to Care2 sponsored Petition Site; "Most of the petitions that are requiring anything are actually being put together for public comment periods for the Army Corps of Engineers, or the Bureau of Land Management. Internet based petitions don't require comments, your name and information would be added to one letter going to those agencies.

Many of the Government organizations have thus decided that all those letters (sometimes thousands of individuals) will count as one public comment and not more, hence making thousands of the signatures invalid. Now obviously, this shouldn't be allowed and we (Care2) are fighting such techniques so that all organization's petitions will count.

Still, to make sure that we don't lose a single signatures and to make an even greater impact, we have our signers add their own unique comments which are added to the beginning and end of each letter.

If petition signers add comments with their signature, the BLM, ACE, etc,, HAVE to read each letter that are collected and they will not be counted as one comment!

In addition, we think that our users have some great opinions that we think decision makers should have to hear!"
