Cori Gunnells - I would like to add Bernie's comment that methane (CH4) is currently building up in the atmosphere (in the upper parts of troposphere and stratosphere) where at 75 mB level its amount has increased 30-fold in the last 3 years. This is very troublesome not because of risk of it igniting, but because it is exceedingly powerful greenhouse gas: molecule-to-molecule it is 256 x more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules.
The recent accumulation occurs in high altitudes because methane is no longer sufficiently oxidised by hydroxyl (OH-) to a less dangerous greenhouse gas of carbon dioxide (CO2). Hydroxyl's presence in the atmosphere requires presence of water molecules (H2O) which are broken up by ultraviolet light to produce (OH-), but there are only limited amount of UV light available to convert water vapour to hydroxyl.
As methane increased, it surpassed the atmosphere’s capacity for hydroxyl to oxidise it. It now ends up above cloud level in extremely arid upper troposphere and stratosphere where its atmospheric half-life grows considerably due to lack of water vapour. As a result air above cloud level is increasingly methane-saturated just as Bernie points out."
METHANE IS 100 TIMES MORE POTENT THAN CO2 WHEN IT COMES TO GLOBAL WARMING
… “Once the methane is in the air, it will be there for 10-plus years until it is chemically converted to carbon dioxide and methane,” said Howarth. “ We cannot do anything about that to speed its loss up. And during those 10-plus years, it is more than 100 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than is carbon dioxide.”
50 MILLION YEARS AGO, 95% OF ALL SPECIES ON EARTH DISAPPEARED, SCIENTISTS BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO A LARGE INCREASE IN METHANE AND CO2, THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING NOW
50 plus million years ago, 95% of all species disappeared, almost overnight. Scientists such as the one above, have studied this event for many years. They blame the global extinction event on methane gas, liberated in massive amounts from the frozen methane hydrate below ground and below the ice sheets, due to high Co2 levels and global warming at that time.
Now we are seeing this same event happen again, with C02 levels at the same high levels as 50 million years ago, and temperatures approaching those same levels, which triggered the extinction event way back then. Let's learn some things about methane, since this is not talked about on the average nightly news segment.

The Arctic is "more heavily burdened with heat-capturing gasses than the rest of the planet (currently at about 405.5 ppm CO2 and 1910 ppb methane as measured at NOAA’s Barrow Alaska station), high amplitude jet stream waves continue to deliver heat in the form of southerly warm wind invasions even as the ocean upon which the thinning ice rests draws ever more energy from an immense volume of warming water. Expanding holes in the ice, a darker, greener, Arctic environment, a rain of soot from massive wildfires burning at the Arctic’s gates — all contribute to overall warming in the Arctic system.

John Scheve I had no idea methane levels in our atmosphere had risen so drastically until I looked it up (see the graph). While carbon dioxide levels have risen from about 280 to 407 parts per million (45%) since the start of the Industrial Age, methane levels have risen 165% in the same time period, with most of the increase in methane occurring in just the last few decades.
Global warming greater than 2 degrees C is thought to be the trigger for massive methane gas releases from the tundra and the sea floor causing runaway global warming. Methane (though shorter lived in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide) is estimated to be 28 (longer term) to 84 times (shorter term, 20 years) more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Atmospheric methane levels have soared from 700 to 1858 parts per billion from the year 1800 to 2018. A sudden alarming surge in measured atmospheric methane levels began in 2014. This is potentially worrisome. It is thought that if 10% of the methane contained in the tundra and sea floor were released into the atmosphere, its contribution to warming the planet would be 10 x that of the predicted carbon dioxide contribution. But it has been generally thought that the sea floor methane hydrates would take hundreds of years to vaporize so that catastrophic warming could not happen in the time scale of a human lifetime.

Dr. Igor Semiletov reports that the amount of methane in the global atmosphere is approximately 5 Gigatons. What is stored just in the Arctic regions underneath ice and/or permafrost that is now melting, which then allows the methane gas to be released is estimated to be 100's to 1,000's of Gigatons. This is not including the methane found under the ocean bottoms in other areas.

WHERE DOES METHANE CLATHRATE ORIGINATE?
The ice ages covered massive amounts of ground that had organic matter in it. As this organic matter decayed via anaerobic methods, it was converted into methane hydrate, or frozen methane gas. Numerous ice ages have added to the storehouse of methane gas, and in between the natural cycles it never warmed up enough to allow these massive storage pools to turn into methane gas; until now. The above picture shows how the frozen methane is buried in huge pockets, layers and reservoirs, just like oil deposits are.
Due to the C02 levels rising to their highest point in 50 million years, the temperatures are also rising to their highest points in 50 million years. The last time the CO2 levels and temperatures got this high, was during the last extinction level event, when 95% of all life on Earth disappeared, almost overnight.
As the permafrost melts in Artic regions, the methane gas is released at rapidly increasing rates. Methane is 200 times more globally warming in it's effects when compared to CO2, per pound of gas.
According to Treehugger; "Typical sources of methane emission include wetlands, rice fields, cattle, forest and grasfires, natural gas leakage and use, and coal mines. Dr Fraser describes the how the balance between methane emission and absorption has apparently been upset.
This fragile balance has resulted in little growth of methane in the atmosphere. Apparently some sources have been increasing, such as from fossil fuel use, cattle, and rice, while others have been decreasing, particularly natural tropical wetlands. However, over the past year, the total sources have overwhelmed the total sinks, and methane has again started to rise.(Science Codex)
METHANE LEVELS ARE RISING CATASTROPHICALLY FAST, MORE THAN DOUBLING FROM PREINDUSTRIAL LEVELS
Pre-industrial methane levels were about 700 parts per billion; these have risen to about 1773 parts per billion today. Though the 2007 concentration increase was only an additional 10 parts per billion, Matthew Rigby of MIT says that is a significant jump for such a short period of time. Rigby added."
METHANE FROM ARCTIC ACCOUNTS FOR 87% OF SPIKING IN ATMOSPHERE
Talk about your ugly positive feedbacks: according to a team of researchers based at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, a source of methane - which likely originated during the last ice age - has surfaced in the Arctic, a likely result of global warming's thawing effect on the permafrost. Methane bubbling from this source could have accounted for up to 87% of the observed spike in atmospheric methane.
"In 2007, scientists scouting the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean began to notice some troubling signs. In about half of their seawater chemistry samples, the concentration of dissolved methane was two to ten times higher than in samples taken during previous years from the same locations. Then, last summer, they observed large rings of gas “” sometimes as wide as 30 centimetres in diameter “” trapped in ice, as well as methane plumes bubbling to the surface over hundreds of square kilometres of the shallow waters along the Siberian Shelf.
More recently, Martin Kennedy and colleagues reported in Nature that a massive release of methane some 635 million years ago might have spelled the end of the last ‘snowball Earth’ period, when ice sheets stretched as far as the Equator. According to their analysis, this was a period of abrupt glacial melting and destabilization of methane hydrates.
Although there is not widespread agreement about what role methane has played in periods of abrupt climate change in Earth’s history,“When we look at the geologic record, at critical thresholds, methane is implicated in almost all of those occurrences,” says Kennedy."

MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF METHANE ICE TRAPPED UNDERGROUND
"There are vast amounts of methane in sediments underneath the Arctic Ocean. Natalia Shakhova et al. (2010) estimate the accumulated potential for the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS) region alone (image on the right) as follows:
organic carbon in permafrost of about 500 Gt
about 1000 Gt in hydrate deposits
about 700 Gt in free gas beneath the gas hydrate stability
Natalia Shakhova et al. (2008) consider release of up to 50 Gt of predicted amount of hydrate storage as highly possible for abrupt release at any time. By comparison, the total amount of methane currently in the atmosphere is about 5 Gt.
In September 2005, extremely high concentrations of methane (up to 8 ppm) were measured in the atmospheric layer above the sea surface of the East Siberian Shelf, along with anomalously high concentrations of dissolved methane in the water column (up to 560 nM, or 12000% of super saturation).
METHANE AMPLIFIES GLOBAL WARMING BY 100 FOLD
Methane's global warming potential (GWP) will rise in case of large releases, since methane's lifetime will be extended as the burden rises, due to hydroxyl depletion. This is a feedback effect that the IPCC estimates will amplify the climate forcing of an addition of methane to the current atmosphere by lengthening the perturbation lifetime relative to the global atmospheric lifetime of methane by a factor of 1.4.
A 2009 NASA article discussing the work by Drew Shindell mentions that, over the years, increases in global methane emissions have caused a 26% decrease in hydroxyl.
Hyrdoxyl is what soaks up methane and keeps it from causing catastrophic global warming. Those protective levels are dropping like a rock.
GLOBAL METHANE LEVELS ILLUSTRATION 2009 - 2013
As a result of man made CO2 rises, due to burning a cubic mile of carbon products each year, methane gas levels are now rising catastrophically fast.
In the picture above, we can see methane emissions in the Arctic in the year 2009, then moving to the left, 2010, 2011, 2012 and finally 2013 all the way to the right. Each year is getting much worse than the preceding year. The process of methane gas mega releases are accelerating.
The image 1 above also shows high levels of methane over the Arctic; very high methane levels are now commonly recorded in the Arctic. The animation at the Arctic-news blog, shows methane levels at various altitudes on January 23, 2013, ranging up to 2241 ppb at 742 mb.
ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATING, DUE TO CO2 RISE IN ATMOSPHERE

In a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Morgan Schaller and James Wright present their finding that climate change can and did happen abruptly, or in geological terms, instantaneously.
Following a doubling in carbon dioxide levels, the surface of the ocean turned acidic over a period of weeks or months and global temperatures rose by 5 degrees centigrade – all in the space of about 13 years.
“We’ve shown unequivocally what happens when CO2 increases dramatically – as it is now, and as it did 55 million years ago,” James Wright said.

HUMANITY TRIGGERING AVALANCHE RELEASE OF METHANE GAS
Bottom line, humanity seems to have or be in the process of triggering an avalanche release of methane gas, that may now be unstoppable. A huge destructive avalanche can be triggered by the sounds of two hands clapping, or a skier traveling down the mountain. Liberating huge amounts of methane gas will have catastrophic consequences for all life on the planet, both in the seas and on land. There is no 'preparing', hiding or escaping from it.
Abrupt climate change that will happen as a result of this massive release of methane gas that has been trapped in the form of methane hydrate 'ice' now seems 99.9% unavoidable.
CAN THIS METHANE CLATHRATE MACHINE GUN BE TURNED OFF, OR, HOW MUCH TIME DOES HUMANITY HAVE LEFT?
The only question left is; how long does humanity have left on the planet before the extinction of massive numbers of species begins, as it has twice before in Earth history?
Remember, something on this scale happened 55 million years ago. Huge volcanic eruptions back then triggered warming of the methane deposits, which triggered methane gas releases, which then resulted in 95% of all life being wiped off the face of the Earth, due to rapid, catastrophic Earth changes.
The extinction back then was initiated by huge amounts of methane being released within a very short period time. This massive methane release has happened twice in Earth history, (635 and 55 million years ago) and both times, methane gas shows up in the historical records as being the primary and largest cause of huge global warming and/or extinction level events.
The MAIN cause of methane gas being released is the global burning of carbon based fuels at a rate of 1 cubic mile per year. We are using up enough carbon fuels EVERY YEAR, that took Mother Nature 1 million years to create.
Bottom line, there are potential non carbon producing answers but none of them are being pursued and all are being blocked, due to the monopolistic control of the Koch brothers types of corporations control of Congress, the Senate, and the White House, plus the media and financial world.
The US is the only nation that still and consistently refuses to ratify/sign the Kyoto Accords, which call for stabilizing the CO2 levels a little lower than 2009 levels. What is wrong with reducing CO2 emissions, when we are faced with global extinction as a consequence of NOT doing that?

None of the people elected to Congress in the last round via the Tea Party even believe in climate change, much less that humans are causing it, due to Koch Brothers success with media control, and with their controlling who gets elected. They have also effectively kept scientists off of the mass media, and substituted the 'faux' scientists or 'experts' hired and financed by the carbon industry.
The Koch brothers have won 95% of the election battles that they throw their money into, as they use their billions of dollars to swing elections their way in most political races. They basically own both parties, and both major parties in the US are controlled by them.
They will more than likely keep doing this, because the very Conservative Supreme Court passed a law saying that huge global corporations are people, and that they can give unlimited amounts of money to political campaigns in secret, without even disclosing that the Koch brother carbon fuel money slush fund are behind 95% of the candidates up for election or re-election.
Normally, the campaign with the most amount of cash wins, no matter who the person is that is running or what their positions are.
Due to media control and 'management' via massive ad budget influences, the Koch brothers have swayed millions of people to also think that global warming does not exist. In the end, if they are allowed to continue this theatre, farce and absolute corruption of science, democracy and human rights, they will lose the war and doom all of humanity to extinction. If allowed to continue on with their 1% monopolistic, global genocide propaganda views, there is no hope for humanity.
SUMMARY; THE SOLUTIONS ARE ALL THERE, READY AND WAITING FOR US
Bottom line, the odds are stacked against humanity, because the 1% has taken over many levers of power and control, and for selfish short term reasons of profit and power, they will not let the truth be known.
The answers are all there. We can switch off all carbon fuel sources via an emergency global Marshal Plan. We need to stop using all wood, oil, coal, gas, propane, natural gas, nuclear, diesel, and gasoline.
The solution (if it is not too late already) is to implement and switch over to hydrogen powered everything, in addition to solar, wind, water, tides, waves, geothermal and other zero carbon fuels.
We can do this as a global community. Even if the odds are stacked 100 to 1 against us, isn't it worth trying? Haven't you ever rooted for the underdog? Well, the underdog now is the whole world, and the evil, despicable people who are destroying the whole world and all life on it are only 1% of the total. So if the 99% really get mad and won't take it anymore, what chance have they got? Bottom line it is all up to us, you and me.
What is the take away? Unless humanity stops the carbon monopoly from dominating the political landscape and figures out a way to make a huge, fast, paradigm shift away from carbon fuels and into carbon free renewables such as hydrogen, water, wind, geothermal and more, it looks like humanity is on a global suicide path. Instead of slowing down, the speed towards this suicide is increasing. There is still hope, but time is running out fast, and the odds of success are dropping by the day.
What is the take away? Unless humanity stops the carbon monopoly from dominating the political landscape and figures out a way to make a huge, fast, paradigm shift away from carbon fuels and into carbon free renewables such as hydrogen, water, wind, geothermal and more, it looks like humanity is on a global suicide path. Instead of slowing down, the speed towards this suicide is increasing. There is still hope, but time is running out fast, and the odds of success are dropping by the day.
