Jeremy Wade - Fishing For Mutated Monster Fish In Contaminated Chernobyl Waterways
Jeremy Wade spent a little time fishing for mutated Wells catfish that spend their lives in the cooling channels of the Chernobyl reactor. He had to get special permission to go through a checkpoint, because this area around Chernobyl is off limits due to high radioactive contamination levels.
Once he got close to the Chernobyl reactor, his radiation monitor kept going off at various places, known as 'hot spots'. All of the places looked alike, and it was only his radiation detector that kept him as safe as possible.
He also brought in clean food, because drinking water or food from inside of a radiation contaminated area is risking your life and health. Before he went into this area, he took a radiation safety course, which is highly recommended for anyone contemplating doing something like this. Do not consider being a radiation tourist, whether you are planning on looking at Chernobyl, Fukushima, TMI, nuclear testing bomb 'pits' or others. There are many types of radiation that can kill you several years after you visit. For example, inhaling a hot particle of uranium or plutonium can prove fatal, years after you visit the place, and you would never link this event to your visit, because the particle is undetectable.

Jeremy had his radiation detector go off numerous times, warning him that he was receiving dangerous amounts of radiation. He detector went off despite the worst radiation being at the bottom of the lake and the cooling channels, not near the top of the water. Imagine what fish are exposed to that cruise near the bottom, where radiation levels are REALLY high, even 30 years after the nuclear disaster.
He finally caught what seemed like a healthy catfish, if one only went by outward appearance. But the radiation detector went crazy, which showed what was really going on. Eating this fish could be deadly for anyone thinking that it was 'safe', just because it was not deformed or showing obvious signs of radiation contamination. This is the danger of radiation.
Anyone with no morals or ethics can grow or catch food in radiation contaminated areas, and sell or export it to anywhere else, and no one would know the difference, unless of course, they had a fairly expensive and sophisticated Geiger Counter with a pancake detector, or a special container type of Geiger counter meant for food items.
The catfish that Jeremy caught was highly radioactive and inedible. It was only 50% of the normal size of catfish for this age. The stunted fish did not look like it was starving. But it was still deadly dangerous.
