SAFECAST MAP OF RADIATION READINGS TAKE IN AIR

There are two primary ways of measuring ionizing radiation. The first method is to take air measurements. Safecast has created maps of radiation readings taken at about chest height all over Japan. Here is what that radiation map looks like. Most of Japan got some radiation, but certain areas got hit hard.

The map above was put together by Lionel Bergeret, with data provided by Safecast. Safecast also provides Geiger Counters kits. (You have to build your own). But more than that, they also provide a way to upload the radiation reading results to a central virtual collection point, which then translates that incoming data from individual Geiger Counters into a crowd sourced radiation map.

The radiation readings on these maps are still somewhat arbitrary, because in most cases these are Geiger Counters attached to cars and the radiation readings are taken while driving down a road, with readings taken every few seconds. Due to driving, the vehicle mounted radiation readings will measure much lower radiation levels than if these same radiation readings were taken near the ground and off the highway in areas where rainwater/mud/dust collects for example.

BEWARE OF RADIATION HOT SPOTS; THEY CAN SHOW UP ANYWHERE


Individual hot spots may also measure much higher radiation readings than these 'average' run of the road readings, but will not show up on the map, because the 'hot spots' are too small to show up. Higher readings taken in between the once every three minute readings may also be missed unless one walks around with a Geiger Counter held near the ground, off the road.

A hot radiation spot may only be several feet to several yards in diameter, but will have intense and very high radiation levels, compared to the surrounding areas. The only way to find these hot spots is to walk around with a Geiger Counter that is held near the dirt/ground, as these hot radiation spots are invisible to anyone just walking around without a meter, or even to someone driving by with a Geiger Counter mounted to the car.

RADIATION MEASUREMENTS ALSO VARY BY THE SENSITIVITY OF THE DEVICE BEING USED AND WHAT ISOTOPE THEY ARE CALIBRATED TO FIND


One can multiply these readings by two to ten times (higher) if one measures near the ground with a quality Geiger Counter that has a sensitive pancake style Mueller tube, compared to readings taken with a cheap, thin and non sensitive radiation detecting technology. Comparing measuring radiation up high off the ground, with a detector mounted on a window of a vehicle for example will tend to lower radiation readings by up to a factor of ten and possibly more.

Remember that any Geiger Counter is only 'seeing' a small fraction of the total radiation out there, because any device needs to be calibrated to a certain frequency, and it can see only that, and very little else.

MEASURING RADIATION ON THE GROUND, INSTEAD OF IN THE AIR, WILL FIND MUCH HIGHER LEVELS OF RADIATION

Measuring radiation on the ground is completely different than measuring radiation in the air. Radiation can and does concentrate at very high levels in small hot spots, and low areas. Forests generally accumulate radiation and concentrate it in the top few inches of 'mulch' or forest leaves/dirt.

Strontium-90, which has a half-life of about 30 years, was most concentrated at a location in Futaba town within the zone. The 5,700 becquerels per square meter detected there was six times the maximum of 950 becquerels per square meter found during fiscal 1999-2008 nationwide surveys by the science ministry and attributed to nuclear tests.

Strontium-90 concentrations exceeding 950 becquerels per square meter were detected at eight locations. Seven of them were either within 20 km of the plant or beyond that radius to the northwest.

The maximum concentration of plutonium-238 was 4 becquerels per square meter, while the maximum combined concentration of plutonium-239 and plutonium-240 was 15 becquerels per square meter."

SUMMARY


In summary, although government and industry provided radiation readings are better than nothing, citizen provided radiation readings are a much better and more trustworthy tool for getting precise and accurate information on a personal level. A good and trusted source of information often comes from the 'crowd', meaning citizens who are running around with Geiger Counters.

 The ONLY way to truly protect yourself from radiation is to purchase and use a sensitive pancake style Geiger Counter at all times. (The tube types of Geiger Counters are almost worthless, because they are so insensitive).

The odds are that if a nuclear accident happens, you and your radiation meter will be the first to KNOW about it, and the mass media news will report on it days to weeks later, if at all.

Measure radiation on the GROUND as well as in the air, especially in places that collect radiation, such as below downspouts, in low spots such as drainage ditches, sewage treatment plants, etc. Remember that these radioactive heavy metal poisons are often heavy, so they find the lowest spot and accumulate there.
