For floating plastics, this device or an equivalent should be required all up and down each river all around the world, especially if humans keep using plastic that NEVER disappears or degrades, because for all practical intents and purposes, plastic does not disappear, ever.

Plastic may degrade and decompose into chemicals, but those chemicals plus heavy metals or synthetic radioactive elements are all toxic and get bio concentrated back up the food chain to humans, who are at the top of the food chain.

Another strategy to reduce plastic bottles going into the oceans that is simple and effective, is to put in drinking fountains where plastic bottles can be refilled on the beaches or in parks near rivers, where large numbers of people congregate. In areas where this has been done, the amount of plastic bottle waste going into the oceans has been reduced by a large percentage.

30 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MOVE TOWARDS A ZERO PLASTIC LIFESTYLE

It can seem overwhelming at first to reduce the amount of plastic being used. It makes sense to make the switch to a zero plastic lifestyle slowly, step by step. Start with one thing, and then add another. Keep moving towards the goal, step by step.

Our plastic in everything lifestyle does have huge negative consequences. Here is the stomach of a dead starved to death pilot whale, with a stomach full of plastic.

Replace styrofoam cups with re-usable metal containers. Avoid using foam or styrofoam.
Replace plastic containers with glass containers that may have metal or plastic tops.
Replace fossil fuel plastic with plastics made from wheat or plants.
Use natural plant based products such as cotton, hemp, bamboo or sisal in place of plastic fossil fuel based nylon, or other synthetic fibers like polyester, found in carpets or other products.
Fossil fuel based clothing is made into rayon, nylon, spandex, acrylic, and polyester. Use natural plant or animal based fibers instead. Check the labels on your clothing.
Recycle plastics
Soapless detergents are fossil fuel based. Use natural soap made from plants.
Reduce the use of plastic items
Buy natural wood or cloth items for toys, instead of plastic ones
Reduce or eliminate chemical use in household/work/government, as they all come from fossil fuels
Many drugs are fossil fuel based. Many of today’s medications are derived from benzene, which comes from fossil fuels. Acetylsalicylic acid is made from fossil fuels, and is found in many OTC drugs like aspirin or other pain relieving products. Use plant based products or herbs instead.
Synthetic vitamins are made from fossil fuels. Use natural plant based vitamins instead.
Do a carbon footprint analysis, then reduce your footprint to zero
Golf balls are made from polybutadiene, a product that comes from fossil fuels. 3 00 million balls are lost each year. Use biodegradable golf balls instead, like this one.
Instead of using plastic dishes and cutlery, switch to people bringing their own plates, cups and silverware from home. Or, second best, use paper plates, paper cups and recyclable cutlery
Fossil fuels can make up 80% of a cosmetic’s ingredients. Switch to natural plant based cosmetics.
Shampoos, soaps, conditioners, perfumes, hair dyes, are mostly fossil fuel based oils, waxes. Switch to natural plant based oils and waxes made into soaps, conditioners, shampoo, etc.
Paper is created with a huge fossil fuel footprint. Use hemp or other plant products instead of paper to reduce fossil fuel footprint and plastic consumption
Food additives are often fossil fuel based and increase shelf life. Buy organic foods without additives.
Many food colorings or art supplies are fossil fuel based. Buy plant based colorings and dyes.
Buy metal or use other non fossil fuel roofing materials
Makeup contains fossil fuel perfumes, waxes and color, like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol and benzene. Avoid these products and choose natural plant based products.
Access Environmental Working Group to search which cosmetics are hazardous.
Avoid using chemicals, because most of them involve fossil fuels as primary source.
Avoid using glycerin, propylene glycol and paraben as they are fossil fuel in origin. Use natural plant based alternatives.
Wax candles contain fossil fuel products. Make your own or buy natural beeswax or plant based candles.
Gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel account for around 72% of petroleum consumption. and the rest are made into other fossil fuel products. Switch to fossil fuel free ways of creating using energy from zero fossil fuel, zero nuclear sources such as wind, water, tides, etc.
Motor oil is made from fossil fuels. Use electric vehicles and switch to 100 percent electric power for all of your tools and things like lawnmowers, weed whackers, etc, as this eliminates just about all motor oil use.
Fossil fuels are used in synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Use natural plant or mineral based equivalents.
Asphalt is made from fossil fuels. There are alternatives such as rammed earth mixed with small amounts of cement. Encourage research and development of fossil fuel alternatives for roads and roofing materials. Gravel roads and European roads made from rocks are also an alternative. Driveways can be made of bricks or pavers, which can be recycled and used over and over again.

Plus, plastic trash collection systems on all rivers would help keep the ocean beaches and waters free of plastic pollution. If the above system is scaled up and taken on by all cities and towns globally, the ocean plastic pollution problem could be resolved fairly quickly. Is there enough interest? Or will the ocean creatures end up choking on plastic bits and dying of starvation and plastic/chemical toxicity?
