This article is rated M, for Mature. Back in the good old days, people would never dare to raise their voices against any church or priest, because church leaders were historically and in many cases are still considered today to be infallible, incorruptible, incapable of doing harm to anyone, and equal to God himself. No one can challenge God, and God has no flaws. So if anyone talked about sex abuse, whether they were nuns or teens or children, they were immediately shunned and possibly even kicked out of the church, which would equal the crime and punishment dealt out to those who committed heresy.

There has been progress over the long arc of history. Instead of being totally ignored and disbelieved, sexual crimes are now reported, here and there in isolated cases, while avoiding the total picture and global framework. Some of these crimes are even pursued in court, with varying degrees of success.

Nuns are coming forward about decades of sexual abuse
VATICAN CITY — The nun no longer goes to confession regularly, after an Italian priest forced himself on her while she was at her most vulnerable: recounting her sins to him in a university classroom nearly 20 years ago.

At the time, the sister only told her provincial superior and her spiritual director, silenced by the Catholic Church’s culture of secrecy, her vows of obedience and her own fear, repulsion and shame.

“It opened a great wound inside of me,” she told the Associated Press. “I pretended it didn’t happen.”

After decades of silence, the nun is one of a handful worldwide to come forward recently on an issue that the Catholic Church has yet to come to terms with: The sexual abuse of religious sisters by priests and bishops. An AP examination has found that cases have emerged in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia, demonstrating that the problem is global and pervasive, thanks to the tradition of sisters’ second-class status in the Catholic Church and their ingrained subservience to the men who run it.

One story shared by a friend of a nun with AGR is that nuns in cloister (silent retreat) are sometimes or often actually victims of sexual abuse or rape, who have been sent off to the cloister by their abuser or by their 'superior', in order to keep them silent and out of the public eye. Nuns who are sent off on silent 'retreats' are ordered to keep silent and kept on the premises, where they can talk to no one else. In effect, they are in solitary confinement, in a prison with no way out.

In an interview with Time, she explicitly laid out her grievances with the Catholic church, clarifying her decision to rip up the pope’s picture:

“It’s not the man, obviously—it’s the office and the symbol of the organization that he represents… In Ireland we see our people are manifesting the highest incidence in Europe of child abuse. This is a direct result of the fact that they’re not in contact with their history as Irish people and the fact that in the schools, the priests have been beating the shit out of the children for years and sexually abusing them. This is the example that’s been set for the people of Ireland. They have been controlled by the church, the very people who authorized what was done to them, who gave permission for what was done to them.”

She described the abuse she experienced:

“Sexual and physical. Psychological. Spiritual. Emotional. Verbal. I went to school every day covered in bruises, boils, sties and face welts, you name it. Nobody ever said a bloody word or did a thing.”

Let's assume that hundreds of accused priests in Pennsylvania are just the tip of the iceberg. Every US state needs to have a grand jury investigate and report on the Catholic Church around this problem. Multiply 300 priests times 49 other states, and you get a total of 15,000 priests in the US who may also be guilty of this same criminal behavior. Now multiply this 15,000 priests times the number of countries around the world, and it is easy to start seeing the horrific scale of 150,000 priests globally with this same 'problem'.

Guilty Archbishop Refuses To Apologize; Judge Spares Him Prison Anyway
Former Archbishop Philip Wilson, until recently one of the highest ranking Catholic clergy in the world, has been spared a prison sentence despite being found guilty of concealing child sexual abuse by a pedophile priest from the authorities.

In handing down his sentence in Newcastle Local Court, magistrate Robert Stone on Tuesday stated Wilson, 67, could serve his 12-month custodial sentence in the comfort of his sister’s home, not behind bars.

Wilson, who was forced to resign as Archbishop of Adelaide in July after becoming the most senior Catholic clergyman in the world to be convicted of concealing child sex abuse, showed no emotion when the decision was handed down — and refused to apologize to victims of his crime.

As the former Archbishop left the court, Peter Gogarty — who was a victim of pedophile priest Jim Fletcher — asked Wilson to apologise but the clergyman refused to make eye contact and stayed silent.

Pope apologizes for priest sex abuse scandal with ‘sorrow and shame’
Abuse complaints were kept in the church’s so-called secret archive and church officials hid incidents, neglected to discipline priests or report them to law enforcement, according to the 1,356-page report.

“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all,” the report said.

The Vatican said in a statement two days after the report’s release that the abuses described “are criminal and morally reprehensible” and “those acts were betrayals of trust that robbed survivors of their dignity and their faith.”

Is this apology going to be enough? Apologies have come out of the Catholic Church before, but nothing changed. 

Well, it turns out the Pope said something notable about child sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church. It turns out that church leaders, not just Catholics, are fallible, weak, corruptible, can and do harm people including children, and they are capable of committing the most criminal acts, including the sexual abuse of children, rape and even the murder of innocent people.

Pope Francis told Italian newspaper La Repubblica in an interview that was published Sunday that “reliable data” pointed to the estimate — which, if accurate, means roughly 8,000 priests worldwide are sexually abusing children."

Explosive letter claims Pope Francis helped cover up Cardinal McCarrick sex abuse
Viganò, who served as ambassador to the United States between 2011 and 2016, claimed that senior Vatican officials knew as early as 2000 that McCarrick regularly invited young seminarians into his bed, but that they still promoted him to cardinal.

Viganò said Pope Benedict XVI eventually imposed sanctions on McCarrick in 2009 or 2010, ordering him to withdraw to a lifetime of prayer and penance, but that Francis chose to rehabilitate him, “cover” for him and elevate him to be a “trusted counselor.”

THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 400,000 CATHOLIC PRIESTS IN THE WORLD AS OF 2012, CATHOLIC MEMBERSHIP HAS GROWN FROM 653 MILLION IN 1970 TO 1.2 BILLION TODAY

In 2012, there were a total of 414,313 priests. While the total number of priests worldwide has therefore remained about the same since 1970, the Catholic population has nearly doubled, growing from 653.6 million in 1970 to 1.229 billion in 2012.

Garza's cousin Lynda De La Vina, who was nine years old at the time, told CNN: 'We were accusing a priest that - in those days priests were infallible.' Noemi Sigler, was only 10, added: 'It was impossible for a priest to do such a deed. I mean, if you thought of it, that would be sacrilegious.'

She also believed that authorities and the church were protecting Feit. 'I don't know whether it was out of respect for the church or anger or fear, I have no idea. 'Shortly after the killing, the church transferred Feit far away to a monastery. He would be moved to other locations over time, and about three years after the killing, the church transferred Feit to Our Lady of Assumption monastery in Ava, Missouri.' 

She even recorded a conversation with a former priest at Sacred Heart, Joseph O'Brien, who claimed Feit confessed to him and was sent away from the area because he was 'dangerous'. Dale Tacheny, a Missouri monk at the monastery Feit attended, also came forward after 40 years because the burden of guilt had become too much, according to CNN.

Child Sexual Abuse Survivors Confront the Vatican

Child sexual abuse survivors traveled to Rome to confront the Catholic church.

Cardinal admits ‘scandalous’ response to abuse allegations
The deeply Catholic city in Australia’s Victoria state has been devastated by disclosures about the huge number of abuse victims, scores of whom killed themselves in a cluster of abuse-related suicides unseen anywhere else.

David Ridsdale said Ballarat’s survivors wanted Pell to “stand up and take responsibility on behalf of the church” for what transpired in Pell’s own hometown.

“We’re here to seek the truth. We’re here to heal our city,” David Ridsdale said. “We have the highest suicide rate among men in Australia. We have some of the worst drinking and violence problems. And it all stems from that abuse.”

Midway through the first of an expected three to four nights of testimony, Ridsdale seemed unimpressed by Pell’s admission of the church’s failings.

“Words are one thing. Actions are another,” he said, in calling for a church-funded compensation scheme that addresses the fact that many survivors are too traumatized by their abuse to support themselves financially.

Calling for a policy like this is very different from actually putting it in place and making it work. Apologizing is very different from taking actions to eliminate the corruption and those responsible for it.

The whole system of 1 percent, top down control via white male Patriarchy is upside down and backwards, along with the system that forces male priests to be alone and become vulnerable to their darkest demons caused by their own childhood abuse, without a helpmate by their side. To 'fix' the Catholic Church, everything would have to be turned inside out and right side up.

THE PROBLEM OF SEXUAL ABUSE IS NOT LIMITED TO JUST ONE FUNDAMENTALIST EVANGELICAL CHURCH; THIS IS A WIDESPREAD EPIDEMIC GLOBALLY


Jehovah’s Witnesses’ child abuse survivor speaks
In the previous two reports by Wiersma she asked the elders who saw her nude photos to testify. Both times they did not show up. “That is the way the Jehovah’s Witnesses deal with this: covering it up, not taking it seriously, treating us, the victims, more like perpetrators. I have even been excommunicated from the church, so they won’t have to worry about it anymore. That way, they give the perpetrators free rein to continue.”

Wiersma’s fear is that her nude photos are still around somewhere. “My uncle and aunt are still members of the denomination, so I want a thorough investigation into where those photos are now and I want them to be destroyed.” That’s just one reason why they can be charged. “It’s just child pornography what happened.”

Furthermore, Wiersma hopes that more victims will start reporting. “At the moment we have about 300 reports, but I’m sure that there will be a lot more. I hope they will get the strength to come out with their stories.” My perpetrators are still walking around free and other children should not become victims of it.”

WHAT YOU OR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OR ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION THAT DEALS WITH CHILDREN CAN DO; TRANSFORM THE STRUCTURE AND HIERARCHY TO A BOTTOMS UP MODEL, WHERE EVERYONE IS EQUAL AND THERE ARE NOT 'SPECIAL' LEADERS, IMMUNE TO ALL CRITICS

To fix what is 'wrong' here are some suggestions to address root cause problems in the structure itself.

1. Church hierarchy would have to be eliminated completely.

2. Every person would be ordained and become a minister.

3. Ministry would have to consist of quiet contemplation and not railing dogma about evil and Satan.

4. Instead of donation money being sent to the Vatican, all money collected locally, would be spent locally, on civic projects and community improvements.

5. Church policy would be changed so that no priest or other adult could ever spend time alone with children. At a minimum, two adults would be present with any children under church activities or with a priest. (Church insurance is now insisting on this policy change.)

6. Any adults spending lots of time with children or teens need to be vetted via a background check, through a national database, just like teachers.

7. Every church needs to have a concrete policy and committee in charge of any allegations made against any individual around abuse of children, and follow a standard protocol of working with law enforcement or social service agencies, to pursue any evidence around this.

The odds of all of the above happening are remote with the current consciousness inside of this organization, but there is always hope.

There is a church that does have all many, most or all of these things in place, and that is the unprogrammed Quakers. Check them out...
