Maybe we are making progress, but it is still hard to believe that in response to a SINGLE terror attack in a foreign country many thousands of miles away, that the mass media globally would cover it, and that the US Congress would then pass a law against all Muslims from Syria, and that xenophobic statements would be made by Presidential candidates, including Donald Trump, who wants to close all of the US borders, build walls and keep out all Muslims.
At least we are not rounding up all Muslims and throwing them into prison camps, as was done to the Japanese during World War II, but the way things are going, that may be the next step especially if everyone just 'goes along' with the fear/hate mongering. Trump promises to round up all foreigners and ship them out of the country, and this is not the first time this has been proposed and then carried out in the US. Remember when all Japanese were thrown into prison camps and lost all their possessions with no trial? Remember when the Indians lost their whole country, all valuable resources and most of their lives? Remember when Chinese were rounded up and sent back to China?

Well, it turns out that Saudi Arabia intends to install their own puppet government in Syria which will allow the Saudis to control the flow of energy through the region.
On the other side, Russia very much prefers the Assad regime for a whole bunch of reasons. One of those reasons is that Assad is helping to block the flow of natural gas out of the Persian Gulf into Europe, thus ensuring higher profits for Gazprom. Now the United States is getting directly involved in the conflict.
If the U.S. is successful in getting rid of the Assad regime, it will be good for either the Saudis or Qatar (and possibly for both), and it will be really bad for Russia. This is a strategic geopolitical conflict about natural resources, religion and money, and it really has nothing to do with chemical weapons at all."

The 1 percent gin up the fear and hatred, and the mass media plays along.. Most people will fall for the fear and hatred propaganda, and then suffer from doing so.
First, Republican governors started saying they won't allow Syrian refugees in their states.(1) Then Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz said only Christian refugees should be allowed.(2)
And just a few minutes ago Congress--including 8 California Democrats--voted to effectively shut down the Syria refugee program altogether.(3)
The terrorist attacks in Paris have sparked the worst outbreak of anti-Muslim bigotry in the U.S. since 9/11.
California Governor Jerry Brown has rejected this hate-mongering and is pledging to continue accepting Syrians fleeing ISIS.(4) But he might not even get the chance after Congress voted to slam the door on refugees.
The U.S. refugee program has a 40-year track record of vetting refugees. In fact, since 1975, 3 million refugees have been resettled in the U.S. without a single terrorist attack slipping through.(5,6)
But that's not stopping Republicans from shamelessly whipping up xenophobia for political gain.
So far, more than 4 million refugees have fled the Syrian civil war. '

SUMMARY
The law just passed by Congress will add two to five years to the 'checking' background process to an already long 2 to 3 year long 'checking' process by many government agencies both abroad and inside the US. Refugees are already checked, double checked and then checked again by a host of international and US agencies. Adding yet another layer of paperwork to this already 2 to 3 year long process is totally insane, and will cause the very big government that the Republicans say that they hate so much.
A FIVE year wait for any Syrian to come to the US effectively builds a wall of paperwork and locks them out, in the same way as the fences and walls being built on our border, and that is the effect of this new Congressional law if it is passed by the Senate and President Obama.
