2018 - 95 PERCENT KELP FOREST LOSS ON WEST COAST ALL THE WAY UP TO SEATTLE

UP TO 95% LOSS OF KELP FORESTS ALONG NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST
FEBRUARY 2, 2018 A GREEN ROAD DAILY NEWS
From Monterey Herald

By Ross Clark, Earth Matters
The abundance of kelp along the California coast fluctuates, declining annually with winter storms. Since 2015, however, we have seen a “perfect storm” during which kelp abundance has declined by as much as 95 percent along the Northern California coastline. Above average water temperature and an increase in sea urchin populations have greatly reduced bull kelp abundance. The loss of this annual alga has had significant effects on other marine species, many of which rely on these forests for shelter and food.

One species that has been greatly affected by the loss of kelp is the red abalone. This mollusk relies heavily on fragments of drift kelp for food, reaching out from its rocky hiding place to grab passing pieces with its sticky foot muscle. Without drift kelp, the abalone must vacate its hiding place in search of other algae. Dr. Rogers-Bennett with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, who studies kelp forest condition, notes that the impacts to the abalone became noticeable in 2016 after a year with low kelp abundance. Divers reported abalone mortality of almost 40 percent, finding large numbers of shells within the rocks and on beaches.

A diver team of 56 researchers, visiting 11 locations along the Sonoma and Mendocino coastline in 2017, reported a 65 percent reduction in abalone density compared with populations from a decade before. The abalone that were found showed clear signs of starvation, including loss of muscle mass and exhibiting risky behaviors in their search for algal food. Research divers found that where there once were dense layers of algae now were only bare rock and urchins. Abalone were found climbing out on the few remaining algal stalks reaching for blades of food, abandoning their usual cryptic cautious ways.

Abalone harvesting has also been suspended in 2018. The few remaining ones are starving to death. This mega Fukushima eco disaster is much, much bigger and much, much worse than even the most alarming article can portray it.

2017 - ABALONE HARVESTING; NO WET SUIT NEEDED, THE ABALONE ARE RIGHT THERE ON THE SHORE

"The other day I was talkin’ fishin’ with one of my good friends, Darwin Dick. Darwin was telling me that he went to the coast to go get some Abalone. While he was walking down the trail to his favorite spot another person told him that he wasn’t going to need his wet suit. The Abalone are right on the shore.

The shore? Sure enough, they were just out of the water. Darwin told me that there were nice size Abalones everywhere. Weird, huh?

Here is the kicker.

When darwin opened up a shell, the meat was very small. Darwin said he thinks that the Abalone are starving to death. They have moved up into the shallow water looking for food. He also said that there are purple sea urchins everywhere. No red urchins, no starfish? Things are definitely out of balance.

Why are they all ignoring it, denying it, suppressing it, and attacking anyone who dares to even mention it, as fear mongers?

WHAT HAPPENED IN 2011, THAT TRIGGERED THIS MASS DIE OFF, WHICH IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE, YEAR AFTER YEAR?

KEVIN BLANCH REPORTS ON DYING PACIFIC OCEAN AND MASS DIE OFFS OF COUNTLESS SPECIES

Jun 4, 2016 - Fukushima news; dying California TIDE POOLS

The above picture shows the broken off tops of kelp strands anchored to rocks, but with nothing growing out of them. The urchin and abalone climb these stalks and eat the leaves as soon as they sprout anything. The nude black stalks with almost nothing growing out of the top is a mute testimony of the dying Pacific ocean. This is what is called the urchin barrens. Of course, the sea stars are almost completely missing, and they are another key stone species.

Perfect Storm” Decimates Northern California Kelp Forests

Among the California coast’s intertidal zones, black abalone were once a prominent feature. Peter Raimondi, a well-known ecologist and professor at the University of California Santa Cruz, has studied intertidal zones for over three decades. In 1982, black abalone were so abundant that individuals were found stacked on top of each other. “Black abalone clearly dominated the intertidal zones, and then just a few years later El NiƱo and disease wiped out entire populations on the mainland coast,” recalls Raimondi.

Via HoTaters June 3, 2016 We used to go for abalone a lot in the area near Fort Ross, pictured in the first link you gave above, or-well. The abalone populations have been threatened for decades. We gave it up a long time ago.

Seeing all those dead abalone, just the shells, on the shore near Fort Ross, California (Mendocino County) just made my heart go up in my throat. This is heartbreaking.

Kevin Blanch was not BS'ng us when he said the life in the Pacific tidepools is GONE.

It's true. These die-offs are absolutely unprecedented.

We used to find just small abalone shells onshore, or pieces of the shells of adult abalone. We NEVER found whole shells, much less more than one shell.

The picture is just chilling."

2014 DATA AND EVIDENCE SHOWS MASSIVE DIE OFF OF KELP FORESTS

For some reason Once the starfish were gone, the urchin took over and starting eating up the kelp forests, along with the abalone.

The Dept of Fish And Game Reports Kelp Forests Have MOSTLY Disappeared...

Picture
https://cdfwmarine.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/kelpcovermap2008-2014.png

What we’re seeing on the north coast is a collapse of the kelp species. And the cause of that is what we’re calling “the perfect storm of multiple large scale stressors”.......
So in 2008, you can see a lot of green. This is where the kelp is reaching the surface waters. In 2014 and 2015, we’re seeing hardly any kelp reaching the surface. So for the last 2 years in a row we’ve seen starving conditions for the north coast. And we’ve see this born out in some really unusual behavior of the abalone. We have some very large abalone climbing up these bare kelp stalks to the top looking for fronds and they’re not finding them. We also see little abalone that are no longer in their crevices...We are also seeing evidence of shrunken abalone in the fishing grounds. This is a picture from a fisherman of one of 3 of his daily catch that looked like this. This is a very weak abalone. It’s small muscular foot that keeps it attached to the rocks-- it should fill out the shell. This is not due to disease, but due to starvation.

What is causing this massive die off of kelp forests and decimation of abalone, along with all of the other species that depend on them? First, a person has to understand that everything is connected to everything else. Something that happened thousands of miles away can have huge negative impacts.. Although there are many root causes of kelp forest die offs, the largest negative effect from Alaska to Mexico and beyond is due to the disappearance of the star fish, who prey on the urchins that eat the kelp.

Why did the starfish disappear from Alaska to Mexico soon after 3/11, with all of them dying, just about at the same time, all the way from Alaska to Mexico? Starfish are the prime predators of urchins. What killed all of the starfish as well as the other species present in tidal pools, which are no longer there?

DR GOODHEART REPORT ABOUT WEST COAST ABALONE STARVING AND ABALONE DIVER GETTING SICK AFTER EVERY DIVE

As the kelp forests disappear, so are the abalone.

Dr. Goodheart just talked with an abalone diver on the west coast.

According to this abalone diver, the kelp has disappeared and bottom is sterile.

The 900 or so species are missing offshore that used to inhabit the kelp forests.

The abalone shells underwater are 'scrubbed' clean, and look someone has polished and buffed them, which has NEVER happened before. Even the ones that have some stuff on them, it is light compared to what used to be there before.

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/GiskvTHzvvA

Abalone are historically covered in stuff and have other critters growing on them. The following picture of an abalone looks more like a piece of coral. It has so much stuff growing on top of it, that the shell is very hard to see.

The diver also noticed that another diver had what looked like an allergic rash on this face after coming out of the water. This was the only skin surface exposed to the ocean.

This abalone diver has experienced health problems after every dive in the Pacific ocean.

What happens when the kelp is gone and there is nothing left to eat? What happens to the 900 species that rely on the kelp, including the ocean sea otters, and mammals that hunt fish in the kelp forests?

The Fukushima Effects on Canada has created an EXTINCTION Event for ALL Marine Life along the Tidal Zones Of Canada! The shell fish are missing also missing are over 600 kelp 70 species of sponges 76 species of star fish 74 species of sea anemones clams oysters scallops mussels over 300 species of birds are missing from the Canadian pacific coastline."

Before 2011, much of the coast line from Mexico to Seattle from spring to fall would be covered in kelp forests that looked like big black mats offshore. These ocean based forests created a huge environment for other sea creatures to flourish. Sardines laid their eggs in these kelp forests and the young fish sheltered in the kelp, protected from predators.

Sardines disappeared in a mass die off after the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster, after bleeding from the eyes and gills, which is now causing mass die offs in many other species that depend on the sardines.

http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2014/09/killer-whales-die-off-along-pacific.html

Kelp is also a keystone species, and when it is missing due to sewage runoff silting the bottom of the ocean and covering the rocks, or a lack of starfish creating urchin over population that then eats the kelp forest down to nothing, it is like creating a desert underwater where almost nothing can live.

After 2011, the first mass die off was experienced by the star fish species which all died off, except for a few lonely purple specimens here and there. Due to the lack of the starfish, which ate the urchins, the urchins experienced a population boom and ate all of the kelp forests. As the kelp forests were eaten down to nothing by out of control urchins, the abalone started starving, as they rely on the kelp fragments breaking off and drifting to the bottom for their food. Sea stars are a KEYSTONE species, so their loss affects many hundreds of other species, if not thousands.

http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2014/08/200-kilometers-of-canadian-pacific.html

WHAT IS LEFT ARE URCHIN 'BARRENS'

In urchin barrens, the sea floor is dominated by the purple and red spines of urchins as they scour the rocks for food. Only the hard, calcified, pink crustose algae can withstand the high-impact grazing pressure currently observed in northern California. The urchin barren conditions may persist until the presence of sufficient predators, disease, or storms reduce the exploding urchin population.

Now the urchins are experiencing a mass die off along with many other filter feeders.

2013 - WHAT USED TO BE THERE WERE COUNTLESS KELP FORESTS, THE MAJESTIC REDWOODS OF THE SEA, BUT THEY HAVE ALL DISAPPEARED

KELP – FORESTS IN THE SEA
"The forest analogy is a valid comparison for many reasons. Giant kelp plants typically grow in close proximity to one another, and because the towering “tree-like” plants often grow in large patches that cover up to 10 square miles/26 sq. km, the term forest seems apropos. Though stunning, it is not merely the foliage alone that divers find so alluring. More than 800 species of marine animals can be encountered in a healthy kelp forest ecosystem, and it is their presence that attracts so many divers. In a typical kelp forest, also known as a kelp bed, there are so many organisms using the resources of the ecosystem for food, habitat, protection and substrate for attachment that it is difficult to calculate the sheer numbers. By itself, a single fully mature plant can support more than one million marine organisms, and there can be thousands of plants in a given kelp bed.

Giant kelp is both the fastest-growing and largest plant in any marine environment. When experiencing ideal growing conditions, a giant kelp plant can increase its length by as much as 2 feet/.6 m in a single day. In only six to eight months of good conditions, a kelp plant can reach the surface from a starting depth of up to 130 feet/40 m. This species rarely grows from any deeper, yet individual plants commonly reach lengths of up to 200 feet/61 m as the golden stipes grow straight up from the sea floor to the surface, where they stretch out horizontally to form a floating canopy. In a healthy forest during late summer and fall, the canopy can be up to 10 feet thick.

With very few exceptions, kelp beds occur in areas with rocky substrate. Forests of giant kelp occur in waters ranging from Santa Cruz, California, in the north to Turtle Bay, roughly halfway down the Pacific side of Mexico’s Baja peninsula in the south. Mature plants are comprised of a stemlike stipe, a number of leaflike appendages called blades, and gas bladders. The blades attach to the stipe via connective tissues called pedicels.

2013 Catalina Island; Abalone eat the fragments of kelp that break off and settle to the bottom of the sea floor..

The loss of the kelp forests is the equivalent of the loss of thousands of square miles of forest on land, which then turns into barren desert. The barren desert is unable to support more than a couple of locusts and scorpions (urchins).

No wonder the seals, sea lions, fish and whales are all experiencing mass die offs. All of these species and more depend on the kelp forests, which are a key stone species, just like the sea stars, which also experienced a mass die off.

ABALONE ARE ALSO BEING DECIMATED BY DRUG GANGS, DUE TO THE LOSE, LOSE FAILED WAR ON DRUGS

The losing and failed war on drugs and drug users is having a growing and negative effect on the abalone population, which then has huge impacts on other species in the sea.

SUMMARY

Cisco April 3, 2015 Although some scientists and medical professionals won't say or write about it, some in confidence discuss the real possibility of horrific global health crisis 15-20 years out, and a biological collapse of the food chain. There are a few, like me, that foresee 85% of biological lifeforms going extinct in 2 decades or less.

The conditions are right for a perfect storm; Fukushima is the final tipping point. Toxic exposure to hydrocarbons, chlorine, various other toxic industrial chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides (all DNA scramblers) in our air, water and food chain are already compromising the health of millions. Think about it for a minute, how many people do you know who are sick or ailing? Who ya gonna believe, them or your lying eyes?"

Root causes of the loss of kelp forests and abalone are a large and growing number of negative tipping points, including acidifying oceans, warming oceans, sewage and chemical runoff into ocean, radioactive pollution from Fukushima, and more. For more information about these multiplying negative tipping points that HUMANS are causing, click on...

45+ Negative Global Tipping Points Report
http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2014/04/2014-list-of-45-global-tipping-points.html

At this point, AGR seriously advises everyone to consider staying out of the ocean, and consider avoiding the sea spray that comes off of the ocean, at least until the ROOT cause of this mass die of many species and negative reaction of humans to plain sea water is identified. Also seriously consider avoiding all sea food produced out of Pacific.

It is called the precautionary principle. Why take the risk if you don't have to?

There is no absolute proof yet, but this a precautionary warning, because something REALLY BAD is happening in the Pacific and many of these things are pointing at Fukushima and something radioactive.
