WHO WAS FRANK OLSON? 


Wikipedia; "Olson was born in Hurley, Iron County, Wisconsin, and earned both B.S. and Ph.D. degrees (Bacteriology, 1938) at the University of Wisconsin. He married and had three children: Eric, Nils, and Lisa.[2] Olson worked for a time at Purdue Universityin West Lafayette, Indiana, and then served as a captain in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps.

As a civilian, he was recruited to Camp Detrick, and to the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories, by the distinguished UW scientist Ira Baldwin, the technical director there. (Baldwin had been his departmental advisor at UW.) At Camp Detrick, Baldwin worked with industrial partners such as George W. Merck and the U.S. military to establish the top secret U.S. bioweapons program beginning in 1943, during World War II, a time when interest in applying modern technology to warfare was high. Olson's duties included experiments with aerosolized anthrax.[3] There were allegations that the US used biological warfare during the Korean War but the government denied this. After 10 years, Olson was a senior bacteriologist at the program.[4]

At some point while assigned as a civilian U.S. Army contractor, Olson began working as a CIA employee with the CIA's Technical Services Staff (TSS), run by Sidney Gottlieb and his deputy Robert Lashbrook.[3] Some of his CIA colleagues were involved in the MKNAOMI-MKULTRA program, previously known as Project Artichoke and, earlier, Project Bluebird. It was a program to explore the possible espionage and military uses of psychotropic drugs.

The author Ed Regis reports that the meeting at which Olson was dosed with LSD took place at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland:

Deep Creek Lake was three hours by car from Camp Detrick. On Wednesday morning, November 18, 1953, about a week before Thanksgiving, a group from the SO Division, including Vincent Ruwet, chief of the division, John Schwab, Frank Olson, Ben Wilson, Gerald Yonetz, and John Malinowski, drove out to the retreat... The Detrick group was met at the lodge by Sid Gottlieb, his deputy Robert Lashbrook, and a couple of others from the CIA....On the second day of the retreat, after dinner, Gottlieb spiked a bottle of Cointreau with a small quantity of a substance that he and his TSS colleagues privately referred to as "serunin" but which was in fact lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD.[5]

Olson asked to quit the biowarfare program the week after the retreat:

Ruwet was surprised to see Olson at 7:30 in the morning, but asked him in. Olson told Ruwet that he was dissatisfied with his own performance at the retreat, that he was experiencing considerable self-doubts, and that in fact he had decided he would like to be out of the germ warfare business. He wanted to leave Camp Detrick and devote his life to something else.[6]

Olson subsequently suffered severe paranoia and a nervous breakdown. The CIA sent him to New York City to see one of their physicians, who recommended that Olson be placed into a mental institution for recovery. This was Harold Abramson, an allergist-pediatrician, who was helping the CIA with the psychotropic research into the effects of the drug.[7]

The ensuing police report said that on his last night in Manhattan, Olson purposely threw himself out of the window of his tenth-floor hotel room at the Hotel Statler, which he had been sharing with Lashbrook, and died shortly after impact.[4]

Murder and wrongful death allegations 1975

Although Olson's family told friends that Olson had suffered "a fatal nervous breakdown" which resulted in the fall,[3] the family had no knowledge of the specific details surrounding the tragedy until the Rockefeller Commission uncovered some of the CIA's MKULTRA activities in 1975. That year, the government admitted that Olson had been dosed with LSD, without his knowledge, nine days before his death. 

After the family announced they planned to sue the Agency over Olson's "wrongful death," the government offered them an out-of-court settlement of $1,250,000, later reduced to $750,000, which they accepted.[8] The family received apologies from President Gerald Ford and then-CIA director William Colby.[9]

The sons of Dr Frank Olson claim that their father was murdered in 1953 after he discovered that his biological research was being used to torture and kill suspects in Norway and West Germany.

After raising concerns about the killings, Dr Olson was allegedly given LSD in a glass of brandy and then executed by the CIA, triggering what his family claims is “a multi-decade cover-up that continues to this day”.

The scientist began working with the spy agency in the 1950s and focused on biological weapons that could be transmitted through the air.

According to the lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Washington DC, he traveled to research sites in Norway, France and West Germany as well as Porton Down, a British government facility in Wiltshire.

During his travels in Europe he “witnessed extreme interrogations in which the CIA committed murder using biological agents that Dr Olson had developed”.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FEW DAYS LEADING UP TO HIS DEATH, AND WHAT WAS SAID ON THE PHONE BY THE CIA AGENT REPORTING THE DEATH? 

If Olson was mentally ill due to the CIA forcing him to take LSD without his permission, consent or knowledge, why was he 'treated' by CIA 'doctors' at a hotel, and not at a hospital or at a mental health facility?

Edward Case More CIA stuff - I'm posting this as a stand alone rather than as a comment to article below so this picture will show. There is a sad story with it - but also an odd quirk to this photo. Isn't Ford's jacket sleeve torn? Didn't he have another jacket in the Residence? Had he just had some sort of accident in the Oval Office? Weird..... but here is the serious part: This picture shows President Ford formally apologizing to Alice Olson for the terrible things done to her late husband Frank Olson by his CIA co-workers during the MK-Ultra program.

Believed to have committed suicide in 1953 as a result of depression, he was later revealed to have been exposed to LSD and other psychoactive drugs as part of experiments, raising suspicion that he had been assassinated by the CIA."

One of Frank Olson's sons, who was a medical doctor, had his father's body exhumed and examined. Dr. Olson believes the evidence shows that Frank Olson skull was fractured before he "jumped" or was thrown out of the hotel room window."

The official story of what happened to government scientist Frank Olson is disturbing enough: The CIA secretly dosed him with LSD and, soon after, he leapt out a 13th-floor window to his death. The CIA then concealed the “facts” for over two decades before the involvement of future VP Dick Cheney and an official apology from President Gerald Ford. But the actual truth is even more bizarre and horrific.

In a move straight out of the CIA assassination manual, an agent may have actually knocked Olson unconscious, then flung him out a Manhattan hotel window to make his death look like a suicide. What follows is the case of Frank Olson, which his haunted sons continue to battle about in the courts, six decades after his death.

The CIA has a reputation for engaging in troubling activities. Even so, its actions here are particularly unnerving because it’s hard to imagine a less likely target than Frank Olson. Born in Wisconsin in 1910, Dr. Olson joined the Special Operations Division of the Army's Biological Laboratory at Maryland’s Fort Detrick in 1950. This bioweapons expert wound up receiving a top civilian security clearance and worked on the as-ominous-as-it-sounds MK-ULTRA. 

Even by CIA standards, MK-ULTRA is a notorious program. A 1977 Senate hearing report said it was intended to “develop a capability in the covert use of biological and chemical materials.” While initially meant as a defensive effort, the goals soon evolved to include mind control. Its research involved dosing “unwitting subjects in social situations” with LSD and then sitting back and seeing what happened. One of these unwitting subjects was Frank Olson. 

Olson’s dose came at a conference among his colleagues from the Special Operations Division and the CIA. At dinner on November 19, 1953, a CIA chemist reportedly served Olson and others from a bottle of LSD-laced Cointreau. On November 24, Olson informed superiors he wished to resign. They sent him to New York for an examination by a doctor experienced in dealing with LSD.

On November 27, it was recommended that Olson be returned to Maryland for psychiatric treatment. On November 28, he had an “accident” as he went out the window of Seventh Avenue’s Hotel Statler (now called the Hotel Pennsylvania). Olson was 43. At the time, his sons Eric and Nils were nine and five, respectively. And somehow, from here it got worse.

The family was traumatized. Frank’s widow, Alice, reportedly developed a drinking problem. Eric and Nils were sexually abused for years by a family acquaintance. Then, in 1975, it was revealed that a scientist had fallen to his death from a New York hotel room in 1953 after the CIA gave him LSD. The Olsons immediately knew the scientist was Frank. They demanded justice from the government.

It seemed to arrive, thanks largely to an assist from the future VP under George W. Bush, Dick Cheney. Then-Deputy Chief of Staff to the future Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Cheney wrote a memo on the “The Olson Matter/CIA Suicide.” He noted that it “might be necessary to disclose high-level classified national security information in connection with any court suit...”

In response, President Gerald Ford invited the Olson family to the White House and personally apologized in the Oval Office. The family received a $750,000 settlement—and redacted documents about Frank’s death. As he read these, Eric realized they still might not have reached the truth. Why was Frank in a hotel, not a hospital? Why was his escort not paying attention when he went out the window? And once he went out the window, why was no effort made to get him help?

Further investigation by Eric suggested the suicide was borderline physically impossible. It was a small hotel room with a high windowsill and a radiator in front of the window, plus the shade had been pulled down. Experts later told Eric that, in just a few steps, Frank would have needed to generate at least 30 mph worth of speed to jump to his death—this is a pace Usain Bolt has never attained.

In unrelated news, a CIA assassination manual from the 1950s noted that the “most efficient accident, in simple assassination, is a fall of 75 feet or more onto a hard surface.” After their mother’s death in 1993, Eric and Nils had their father exhumed and performed a second autopsy. This one noted an unreported hematoma on their father’s temple. Yes, the manual does contain the sentence: “Blows should be directed to the temple...”

The forensic pathologist who examined the body called this new evidence "rankly and starkly suggestive of homicide." The Manhattan district attorney’s office changed Olson’s cause of death from “suicide” to “unknown.”

Over the years, the Olson family has uncovered evidence they believe supports their theory. Olson’s body was exhumed in 1993 and a forensic scientist, James Starrs, concluded that he had probably been struck on the head and then thrown out of the window. Later, the New York district attorney conducted an investigation into his death which was inconclusive.

Scott Gilbert, lead counsel in the lawsuit, said: “It’s unfathomable that our own government could stand by as its agents, operating on United States soil, killed an American citizen in cold blood, destroyed his family, and then allowed those directly responsible to walk away without so much as a blemish on their personnel files. Instead of putting its energy and resources into doing what is right, the United States – including this administration – has sought to bury this and hide the truth.”

The CIA designed LSD with a Swiss manufacturer as part of the MK Ultra program in hopes that they could force people to take it and convince them to do unspeakable acts, all of which they’d forget the following morning, once the drugs wore off.

Testing started with unwilling participants being lured into a hotel room by prostitutes, who would then slip the drugs into their drinks. A CIA agent would then watch the test subjects as they tripped out behind a wall of the hotel room.

The particular project within MK Ultra that the prostitutes were involved with was called Midnight Climax. This eventually turned into full-blown brothels in the U.S. run by the CIA, whereby the women working there would lure men into them, but instead of receiving sexual favors, were unknowingly drugged and then observed by CIA agents. Though the CIA sanctioned program, MK Ultra, may have ended in the 70s, it’s clear that the cycle of ritual, abuse, and mind control techniques that were involved with the experiments has not.

CHENEY AND RUMSFELD LINKED TO MURDER OF CIA SCIENTIST?

Eric Olson had always maintained "my father was murdered on the highest authority". He has fought a long battle to prove his point. But at every step he was blocked by two of the most powerful men in Washington - Cheney and Rumsfeld.

But the documents which have surfaced in Washington all too clearly pinpoint the role the two men played in covering-up the murder of Frank Olson.

In a "Flash Secret" memo from Cheney to Rumsfeld, the future Vice President warns if the truth emerged "it might be necessary to disclose highly classified national security information".

Another memorandum to the President (Gerald Ford) reveals that Eric Olson and his family "have indicated their shock and outrage at the circumstances surrounding Dr Olson's death". The memo suggests "the President expresses his own outrage" over the death. Cheney warns in a further memo that Olson's job "is so sensitive that it is highly unlikely we would submit relevant evidence on the issue of his duties".

The 23 pages of documents paint a clear picture of the determination of Cheney and Rumsfeld to keep secret Olson's work and to ensure, as a matter of public policy, it must remain secret that "a drug criminally given him (Olson) cannot as a matter of law be determined he died in the course of his official duties".

"Note, parenthetically, that after the Manhattan DA’s office reopened its investigation, one of the Assistant DA’s assigned to the case, Steve Saracco, during the course of his investigation, independently corroborated through sources in Israel, that the Mossad did study Frank Olson’s death as a picture-perfect, deniable assassination."

It is interesting to note that "enhanced interrogations" closely related to the prison based MK-ultra program.
