From the beginning of the atomic age in 1952, over 172 nuclear reactor construction projects were started, but out of those in operation, only 9 have been operating for more than 20 years, and 59 were cancelled before operation or shortly afterwards.

But the following graph in an official government report greatly whitewashes the actual true numbers, which are actually much, much worse.


The overall global failure rate of nuclear plants before they are even finished being built is approximately 50%, which is a dismal failure record for the entire nuclear industry. Solyndra was heavily attacked and the whole solar industry was blamed as just ONE solar project financed by the government. Solar was declared worthless and useless by the mass media attack dogs with just one solar plant failure.

Meanwhile, HUNDREDS of much more expensive money losing nuclear plant disasters have been covered up, hidden and denied since the 1950's, and no mass media outlet will report on any of this.

In reality, the nuclear industry should have been in the news for being a total money losing disaster, instead of solar, due to the HUGE monetary losses and negative consequences that come out of this industry, compared to any other renewable energy industry. In total, over 120 nuclear plants financed by the US government and taxpayers have failed in the US..

But if you ask the average person on the street about this financial disaster of Biblical proportions, none of them will know anything about it.

While the exact value of these subsidies can be difficult to pin down, even conservative estimates add up to a substantial percentage of the value of the power nuclear plants produce—approaching or even exceeding 100 percent in the case of legacy subsidies and subsidies to new privately-owned reactors (see chart).

Subsidies prove addictive

Subsidies were originally intended to provide temporary support for the fledgling nuclear power industry, but the promised day when the industry could prosper without them and power from nuclear reactors would be “too cheap to meter” has yet to arrive.

It is unlikely to arrive any time soon, as cost estimates for new reactors continue to escalate and the nuclear power lobby demands even more support from taxpayers. Piling new subsidies on top of existing ones will provide the industry with little incentive to rework its business model to internalize its considerable costs and risks

NUCLEAR POWER: Still Not Viable without Subsidies
Throughout its history, the industry has argued that subsidies were only temporary, a short-term stimulus so the industry could work through early technical hurdles that prevented economical reactor operation. A 1954 advertisement from General Electric stated that, “In five years—certainly within ten,” civilian reactors would be “privately financed, built without government subsidy.” That day never arrived and, despite industry claims to the contrary, remains as elusive as ever.

The industry and its allies are now pressuring all levels of government for large new subsidies to support the construction and operation of a new generation of reactors and fuel-cycle facilities. The substantial political support the industry has attracted thus far rests largely on an uncritical acceptance of the industry’s economic claims and an incomplete understanding of the subsidies that made—and continue to make—the existing nuclear fleet possible. 

Such blind acceptance is an unwarranted, expensive leap of faith that could set back more cost-effective efforts to combat climate change. A fair comparison of the available options for reducing heat-trapping carbon emissions while generating electricity requires consideration not only of the private costs of building plants and their associated infrastructure but also of the public subsidies given to the industry. Moreover, nuclear power brings with it important economic, waste disposal, safety, and security risks unique among low-carbon energy sources. Shifting these risks and their associated costs onto the public is the major goal of the new subsidies sought by the industry (just as it was in the past), and by not incorporating these costs into its estimates, the industry presents a skewed economic picture of nuclear power’s value compared with other low-carbon power sources.

The first abandoned nuclear power plant with full accessible reactor core is in East Germany. It's one of the most lost and dangerous places on Earth. Marble Hill is currently being used for industrial scrap material. Construction began in 1977 and was halted in 1984 with Unit #1 approximately 80% complete and Unit#2, 40% complete. A proposal in June 1984 to complete the project was made by three of the major construction contractors: the Bechtel Power Corporation, Sargent And Lundy and the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This plan was rejected because it required Public Service Indiana to continue to find financing for the $7.1 billion project.

Two "sister" plants were constructed, Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station and Byron Nuclear Generating Station, both in Illinois. Braidwood serves the Chicago area. As a point of comparison, the Braidwood facility took 12 years to build at a final cost of $5.2 billion.

The late 1960s and early 1970s saw a rapid growth in the development of nuclear power in the United States. By 1976, however, many nuclear plant proposals were no longer viable due to a slower rate of growth in electricity demand, significant cost and time overruns, and more complex regulatory requirements. Also, there was considerable public opposition to nuclear power in the USA by this time, which contributed to delays in licensing planned nuclear power stations, and further increased costs.[1]

120 NUCLEAR REACTORS WERE CANCELLED, JUST IN THE US ALONE


By the end of the 1970s it became clear that nuclear power would not grow nearly as dramatically as once believed. This was particularly galvanized by the Three Mile Island accident in 1979. Eventually, more than 120 reactor orders were ultimately canceled[2]and the construction of new reactors ground to a halt. Al Gore has commented on the historical record and reliability of nuclear power in the United States:

Of the 253 nuclear power reactors originally ordered in the United States from 1953 to 2008, 48 percent were canceled, 11 percent were prematurely shut down, 14 percent experienced at least a one-year-or-more outage, and 27 percent are operating without having a year-plus outage. Thus, only about one fourth of those ordered are still operating and have proved relatively reliable.[3]

FAILURE OF US NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM DETAILED

A cover story in the February 11, 1985, issue of Forbes magazine commented on the overall management of the nuclear power program in the United States:

The failure of the U.S. nuclear power program ranks as the largest managerial disaster in business history, a disaster on a monumental scale … only the blind, or the biased, can now think that the money has been well spent. It is a defeat for the U.S. consumer and for the competitiveness of U.S. industry, for the utilities that undertook the program and for the private enterprise system that made it possible.[4]

During the 2000s, aging infrastructure, growing power use and fears of global climate change all prompted what was then called the "nuclear renaissance". Engineering companies noted that the commissioning process was a major barrier to further construction, and changes to the system were carried out by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, along with new tax incentives and loan guarantees. As many as 30 new reactors were planned by 2009.[5]

As of 2013, only five new reactors are under construction, two at Vogtle, two at Summer, and one at Watts Bar. All of these projects have announced delays and budget overruns. All of the other new builds and the equally extensive list of upgrades to existing reactors have been shelved. The majority of this change in fortunes is due to the rapidly falling prices of natural gas.[5]

Wikipedia: "The SL-1, or Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One, was a United States Army experimental nuclear power reactor which underwent a steam explosion and meltdown on January 3, 1961, killing its three operators. The direct cause was the improper withdrawal of the central control rod, responsible for absorbing neutrons in the reactor core. The event is one of many reactor accidents in the United States that caused deaths and/or other radiation exposure. The accident released about 80 curies (3.0 TBq) of Iodine-131. About 1,100 curies (41 TBq) of fission products were released into the atmosphere. 

The facility, located at the National Reactor Testing Station approximately 40 miles (64 km) west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was part of the Army Nuclear Power Program and was known as the Argonne Low Power Reactor (ALPR) during its design and build phase. It was intended to provide electrical power and heat for small, remote military facilities, such as radar sites near the Arctic Circle, and those in the DEW Line. The design power was 3 MW (thermal). Operating power was 200 kW electrical and 400 kW thermal for space heating. 

In the accident, the core power level reached nearly 20 GW in just four milliseconds, precipitating the reactor accident and steam explosion.

Great fun is being made of Solyndra by the corporate owned and monopoly controlled mass media.. One solar plant was abandoned due to the huge 50% price cuts in solar panels in just one year by China, which is taking over the solar and wind energy market using illegal trade methods, but no one mentioned the Communist Chinese or their illegality as a root cause of the failure of this plant. 

With Solyndra, no one was poisoned with nuclear radiation. The manufacturing plant did not melt down. No huge 20 Billion dollar project to dismantle it over the next 100 years had to be undertaken at taxpayer expense.
