THERE ARE MANY GOOD REASONS WHY OUT OF 253 NUCLEAR REACTORS, 121 OF THEM WERE NEVER FINISHED, AND THOSE THAT WERE COMPLETED, INCREASED IN COST BY 300 PERCENT; WHO WOULD BUY A HOUSE OR A CAR LIKE THAT?

Of the 253 reactors that were ordered by 1978, 121 were canceled either before or during construction, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists' David Lochbaum. Nearly half of these were dropped by 1978. The reactors that were completed—the last of which came online in 1996—were over budget three-fold on average.

“Regulated” areas, where state authorities set electricity prices such that nuclear operators are guaranteed a profit, contain the rest of the U.S. reactors. Even for many of these plants, the economics may not allow for survival much longer. According to Credit Suisse, the cost of operating and maintaining the aging reactor fleet is rising at 5 percent a year and the nuclear fuel cost is growing even faster, at 9 percent annually. Wind and solar power costs, on the other hand, continue to drop as their electric output grows rapidly.

THE LESSON OF FUKUSHIMA FOR THE WHOLE WORLD IS THAT NUCLEAR IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND TOO RISKY TO HAVE AROUND, AND LOSS OF CONNECTION TO THE GRID CAN BRING ANY NUCLEAR PLANT DOWN, AND THEN BANKRUPT THE COUNTRY DUE TO THE CONSEQUENCES OF THAT

Fukushima affected the whole world with radioactive fallout. Even German's know that, and they are protesting the restart of any nuclear reactors in Japan, which is riddled with earthquake faults, volcanoes and has frequent tsunamis on the coastlines, where all of the nuclear plants are built.

Germany shows by example how nuclear can be phased out.

BY 2012, NUCLEAR ENERGY USE IN US HAS DROPPED TO 8 PERCENT, NUCLEAR ENERGY PEAKED IN 2006, AND HAS BEEN DROPPING EVER SINCE

As of 2012, nuclear energy use in the U.S. is only around 8% and dropping. Several more nuclear plants have closed since this statistic came out, so the total should actually be lower than that.

Renewable energy use is 9% and rising in the US, as of 2013.
For the world as a whole, nuclear power generation peaked in 2006 and dropped by more than 10 percent by 2013. In the United States—the country with the most reactors—nuclear generation peaked in 2010, then dropped by nearly 3 percent by 2014. In second-place France, nuclear output has dropped nearly 7 percent since peaking in 2005. Similar declines can be seen in several other leading countries. These trends are likely to continue and even to accelerate as the world nuclear fleet ages and as solar- and wind-generated electricity comes online at a much lower cost than electricity from new nuclear plants.

SOME ORGANIZATIONS CLAIM THAT NUCLEAR MAKES UP 20 PERCENT OF US ENERGY MIX, BUT USE MISLEADING DATA AND 'ESTIMATES' NOT ALIGNED WITH ACTUAL REALITY ON GROUND

There is an explanation for what may look like confusing numbers...

The nuclear industry may very well be generating 19% of all energy in the USA, but less than 50% of what they generate is being consumed. The rest is wasted or lost to cooling spent fuel pools and pumping water through nuclear reactors to keep them from melting down and exploding, or to the fact that backup plants need to be kept idling on standby for EVERY nuclear plant, and they emit carbon 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, for nothing. The difference may also include the energy that is used up for mining uranium, processing it, shipping it and converting it, all of which uses huge amounts of fossil fuels.

One graph showing 19% of nuclear energy in US is generated here.

NUCLEAR INDUSTRY FACES SEVERE OBSTACLE: IT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE ENERGY SOURCE, OFTEN 300% TO 400% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ANY OTHER SOURCE OF ENERGY, WITH NO SOLUTION FOR UNSOLVED 1 MILLION YEAR NUCLEAR WASTE ISSUE ON TOP OF THAT

Nuclear energy is obsolete financially speaking and the costs plus risks just keep increasing over time, without even the cost and expensive risks of storing the radioactive garbage for 1 million years included in the bill, much less all of the expensive health bills that arise with this very dirty and unhealthy industry.

According to DailyKos; "Entergy Corporation’s August 27, 2013 announcement of the pending shutdown of the Vermont Yankee reactor at the end of its current fuel cycle was just the latest blow to the industry, which already has seen four other reactor shutdowns (the most in one year ever) and the abandonment of six proposed new reactors, not to mention cancellation of five planned power uprates. And more may be coming.

Just like the horse and buggy became obsolete after the first Ford car came off the assembly line, so the nuclear industry is now obsolete and dead, due to the many negative drawbacks and harm caused to all of the living web of life from the invisible heavy metal radioactive poisons that come from every nuclear facility.

Solar, wind, water, geothermal, and hydrogen are all energy sources, without any of these issues and they do not MELT DOWN and ruin tens of thousands of square kilometers of land permanently.

SOLAR, WIND, WATER POWER INDUSTRIES ARE GROWING AT FRENETIC PACE AND ARE OUTCOMPETING SOLAR ON THE OPEN MARKET, DESPITE GETTING ONLY 1/10 OF THE SUBSIDIES

Alternatives to nuclear power, especially solar and wind, are growing at a frenetic pace as costs plunge. A rooftop photovoltaic system is now being installed in the U.S. every four minutes, and that will become every 90 seconds by 2016. John Wellinghoff, the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said in August 2013 that “Solar is growing so fast it is going to overtake everything.” If a single drop of water on the pitcher’s mound at Dodger Stadium is doubled every minute, Wellinghoff said, a person chained to the highest seat would be in danger of drowning in an hour. “That’s what is happening in solar. It could double every two years," he said. The goal of a nuclear-free, carbon-free energy system by mid-century suddenly seems quite attainable.

The nuclear industry is imploding, a nuclear-free carbon-free future is increasingly attainable, and those are both good things. We can hasten this process by turning out in big numbers at every one of the Waste Confidence meetings. Let's do it. ALL NUCLEAR PLANTS NEED TO BE SHUT DOWN BEFORE CARRINGTON EVENT HAPPENS (A HUGE SOLAR STORM)

A huge Carrington Even can doom humanity, just due to loss of the grid, which is what brought down Fukushima.

ALL NUCLEAR PLANTS ARE VULNERABLE TO LOSS OF GRID POWER, WHICH THEY ALL RELY ON 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME

Many nuclear power plants could not remain operational in the event of a long term grid failure, resulting in multiple meltdowns. In the event of a severe solar storm many facilities in many countries could be put in jeopardy. When a plant loses power it has to rely on backup (30 days) required for American plants. The problem with a massive grid failure is not just power, but food, civil issues due to food shortages, fuel distribution, refrigeration issues, etc. Plant workers need to eat as well and a several month grid failure would create absolute pandemonium.

Workers would abandon posts in order to help family, fuel would get used up fast. Pumps rely on the grid at gas stations and nuclear power plants. Many nuclear plants in the USA are 30+ years old and have limited power/cooling redundancy. And, no power plants are designed to withstand an 8.3+ earthquakes, besides the power grid issue. Hundreds of Japan Fukashima level events could result within a month to two month period following long term grid failure.

Get this conversation going so Congress will take action. Japan has some of the safest standards other countries have far from safe systems. Research for yourself and get people informed. Action must be taken now to prevent this from happening.... They know it is possible. see link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftermat... (day 10)

It is important that people understand how fragile nuclear power plants are. They can be crippled by a number of events, but power failure is a very important and often over looked. The back-up power will only last for a couple weeks at the most. The Japanese plants failed from power loss.. That is why they are running in power now to get the pumps and water moving again. A complete grid failure for months to years would cause massive meltdowns.
http://hendrawanm.wordpress.com/2011/...

The solar storm that NASA is warning about in 2012 could cause 100s if not 1000s of nuclear plant meltdowns. As a huge loss of power would force plants to use backup power, These plants only have weeks worth AT THE MOST. A large solar storm will cause worldwide blackouts for months maybe years. Counties like India and China have grids that are primitive and both have many nuclear power plants. Ours (USA) is not much better. We are talking about 100s of Japan level events across the globe at the same time. Nuclear plants can shut down but very slowly . The spent wastes can not. It is in water, when water is lost due to power failure meltdown will happen as sure as a rock falls to the ground when you drop it."
