Dengue fever is a disease caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes.

The number of cases of dengue fever has increased dramatically since the 1960s, with between 50 and 528 million people infected yearly.[2][3] Early descriptions of the condition date from 1779, and its viral cause and transmission were understood by the early 20th century. The complication is rare, says Halstead. Still, he was so worried about the safety concerns that he wrote at least six editorials for scientific journals. He even made a video to warn the Philippine government about the problem.

“I just think, ‘No, you can’t give a vaccine to a perfectly normal, healthy person and then put them at an increased risk for the rest of their lives for plasma leakage syndrome,’ ” Halstead says. “You can’t do that.”

“Yes, we did. It was what we call a ‘conditional recommendation’ with the emphasis to minimize potential risks,” says Dr. Joachim Hombach, who led WHO’s review of the vaccine. “We saw the problems. We also clearly pointed to the data gaps.”

WHO recommended that Sanofi do more experiments to better understand the vaccine’s safety issues. In its assessment, WHO pointed out that the vaccine “may be ineffective or may theoretically even increase the future risk of [being] hospitalized or severe dengue illness” in people who have never been exposed to dengue – which is about 10% to 20% of Philippine children.

WHO’s recommendation came three months after the Philippines launched its mass vaccination campaign in April 2016.

DENGUE FEVER VACCINE BAN BY DOH WILL LIKELY EXTEND MORE THAN A YEAR

Dengvaxia ban likely to extend for more than a year – DOH
“Iyong one-year suspension on Dengvaxia CPR is not yet lifted and I do not see it being lifted anytime soon. We still have a lot of pending issues with the vaccine and at this time we do not see it being registered and allowed for marketing in the Philippines…regulatory issues and cases in Court,” said DOH Spokesperson Usec. Eric Domingo.

It will be recalled that the FDA suspended Sanofi for not submitting its post-marketing authorization requirements which were supposed to prove that the products manufactured by the pharmaceutical company are safe to use.

Sanofi also couldn’t assure the safety of Dengvaxia, according to DOH.

The DOH noted that in November 29, 2017, Sanofi released a statement that Dengvaxia is not advisable to be administered to seronegative recipients —children or adults—who never had dengue infection prior to injection for the reason that their cases are likely to develop into severe dengue.

“It cannot be used without testing for children if they had dengue before. And there are no available testing kits commercially to do that. We don’t see naman any use for the vaccine at this time,” Domingo said.

Parents Immediately Should Require an Autopsy That Includes Certain Tests

Parents should realize their gut instincts most often are correct, especially about their child whom they have been taking care of since birth. No one knows a child better than his/her mother. Ideally, parents will have documented any new health conditions their child experienced after receiving vaccinations, e.g., screaming fits, seizures, fevers, etc. That documentation will be most helpful later on.

There is nothing a parent can experience that is more traumatic than the death of a child. But, when a death tragically occurs shortly after vaccination, time is of the essence. Usually, the coroner is appointed by government authorities. Parents need to know they have every right to request the pathologist perform post-mortem blood and tissue assays/analyses, and to preserve the samples and data they reveal. 

Parents may need an attorney’s legal help and/or intervention to get the proper tests performed. Nevertheless, parents have every legal right to request an autopsy be performed, including certain tests looking for toxins, similar to what is done in drug overdose deaths. Parents also have the right to request storage of samples for future tests that are developed as new scientific discoveries are made.

Grieving parents must remember this is a time to rely on loving family and friends to help provide support in their quest to ascertain the child’s cause of death, which can be determined in most cases via proper post-mortem examination.

Parents must remember physicians and emergency room personnel are typically not trained to recognize adverse reactions from vaccines. Therefore, it is common practice for child abuse/neglect, or Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) legal charges to be filed against parents of children who die from vaccine damage to the brain, especially if there are no visible trauma marks on the child’s body. What if the mass media, hospitals and doctors recommended keeping any child with measles at home, just like for the flu, and get a lifetime immunity due to the measles infection, for children who have not been vaccinated?
